Default Ls/Vtec High rpm issues

Ok so im new to the site and sorta a car noob. I have a 94 eg hatch with a
b18a bottom end and a b18c1 top end all bone stock. for the longest time I couldnt hit vtec at all. the car would hit about 5k and sputter sounding like it wasnt able to go any faster and popping and all that jazz.

a week ago i bought the Neptune RTP set-up and got all that hooked up and started playin with the vtec settings and now the car will hit vtec but the car just gets loud as hell and still sputters and pops like its backfiring around 4k rmps.

Ive read forums ive done research ive looked A LOT so any help would be nice. also have a high idle problem around 1500 if that means anything. i havent checked the fitv or the iacv yet fully but idk if the sputtering and power is connected to the high idle in anyway. i doubt it but never know.

For the idle problem try to look for a vaccum leak, idle adjusment. Are your getting any CODE? Check your fuel mix and timing fro the high rpm problem, Oxygen Sensor working?

A big vaccum leak could affect the oxygen sensor reading!

Do you have a wideband? Have you tried to take a datalog when this happens? Are you using the gsr fuel and ignition maps?

I don't have a single code tripping. I had the oxygen sensor trip once a couple weeks ago but it hasn't done it since. I do not have a wideband but my o2 sensor on my computer was reading a 16 or a 17 I think but idk what these numbers mean

Im running a p28 ecu that was chipped by some shop in Colorado (before i had the car) and when i got it i removed the chip and put in the Neptune RTP to try and correct/find my problems. i havent checked the ignition coil yet plugs wires all brand new and i know the dizzy is right because they gave me the wrong one to begin with.

its hard for me to check it right now because i think i ****ed something else up when i was testing it trying to fix it the other day. something with the suspension it clicks real bad and all that when i try to drive. and the tire is sitting at a wicked camber which means i obviously broke something. i have to get it to a lift to get under it though.

It really sounds like your ecu, try to find a p72 or a p13 which has the secondary required by the 18c1 intake manifold (or an ecu that has all these function disable). Then make sure the knock sensor, vtec soleniod, and vtec pressure switch is wired correctly. It was never running properly in the begining, get it tip top shape before trying to add other components.

Vtec does engage so it can't be oil jets and conisdering the exhaust (from test pipe back) was off I could definitely hear vtec engage. In all honesty I have 4 vehicles so I'm currently in the process of disassembling the motor and doing a full blown project. I have everything out except the block and tranny. I'm going to redo everything. All sensors all internals and gaskets and seals and yada yada yada. The whole shibang. So I'm sure ill have it fixed by next summer. Thanks for the help everyone!

im guessing its your ecu checked for any burning smell coming from it sometimes it wont even have that. but anyway it could be your ignition timing and your ecu its happend to me before i changed my ecu everything was alright then my friend told me my ignition timing was way off fixed that and everything was great pulled for a single cam lol

maybe the vtec solenoid isnt getting accurate readings/sporatic...check your oil pressure, and vacuum lines. Other options....the high idle could have something to do with your o2 sensor, but if you have no cels than maybe it is your ecu like everyone is saying.
Its always easy to blame the ecu tho so I wouldnt just go pick up one, if you have 4 cars can you use any other obd2 ecu ?

Hey I know its been a while since I've been on BUT just to let everyone know i did figure out the problem so in case this ever happens to someone well now you know.

SO, what happened was my buddy had a timing belt cover off a b18b1 and the block was a b18a1 the TDC marks were about an inch away. as frustrated as i was i should be thankful my motor did not blow.
