Default Oil leak, appears to be coming from filter.

I have done literally thousands of oil changes in the past 30 years and never had a filter leak. Changed oil on my '91 EX and after about 1,000 miles it started leaking from what appeared to be the filter. I had a Fram on it so I pulled it off, the rubber gasket stuck to the pad on the block whick I thought odd because I always lube the gasket with a film of clean oil. I replaced it with a Bosch Premium filter and it is still leaking. Are F22's picky about oil filters ? I know the old Chevy (Isuzu) LUV's were. It seems odd though that the Fram didn't leak for the 1st thousand. The valve cover is not leaking but I can feel an electrical connection above the filter and it is wet with oil, is this the sending unit for the oil pressure light and if so what are the odds of it leaking ? It may be wet from the oil filter but what little I can see of the filter with the car running it doesn't show any "spray" like the oil coming out is under pressure it's more of a fast drip like a leaky faucet.

I'm having new brakes put on tomorrow so I'll have them check it out while it's up on the hoist but it's really p#$$in' me off.

the only time I ever had an oil filter leak was because I over tightened it. Other than that never a problem. sounds like you might have gotten a funk filter.

I always check for the old gasket when I remove the filter, then wipe the block clean, lube the new gasket and just snug the filter with my fingers then take it another 1/4 turn. Been doin' it that way for 30 years. ( Actually it would be more like 27 years because my first cars had the old canister type oil filters. Be glad nobody uses those anymore. ) I know I have crappy luck but to get 2 bad filters from 2 different companies surpasses even my bad luck. No, there has to be something else going on. This is a pretty steady drip when the motor is running and I lost 1/2 a Qt. in 40 miles ! I've seen a stacked gasket blow and you usually lose all your oil RIGHT NOW.

Maybe the filter was faulty... sucks but you should change it and whatnot to find out.

You didnt happen scrape the old filter seal off with a screwdriver did you?
NEVER! And when I put the 2nd filter on I ran my fingers over the filter pad to see if the last guy did. I'm hoping he didn't do much work on the car as most of what he had done is classic "Primitive Pete". Sad part is he was supposedly a mechanic !

I'm zeroing in on the sendng unit as the culprit now. Should know tomorrow night, I'll post the autopsy results.

That does sound like a leaking sender. They're not a real common problem, but I do see one every once in a while.

It's the sender.

It's the sending unit for the oil pressure gauge or light. It is about 4 inches directly above the oil filter. Mine was leaking out of the center of the sending unit down onto the filter and then the exhaust.

If it's coming out of the middle of the sender it needs replaced (not expensive). Doubtful it has worked loose.

If the puddle is under the end of your motor it is most likely a seal, middle of the motor at the back could be the sender .

You can't change your avatar yet, I think you have to behave and have around 35 posts.
