I posted this over on HHU a while back and nobody knew what was going on. I have a 1996DX coupe with a 5spd. It has very few mods, 95% stock. The only real mod on it is a d16y8 intake manifold, tb, and some cheap CAI. The car has 111k on it, I got it with 74k. IM was installed at 98k~.

After the manifold was installed, the car developed a rapid clicking noise from somewhere under the hood. The sound does not occur when the car is cold, it only starts after it has warmed up somewhat. The sound also only occurs when I depress the throttle down gently, like, cruising at a steady 65mph on the highway gently. If I depress the pedal down more, like when I accelerate the car, the clicking will disappear.

The clicking also does not happen at idle, although it does keep clicking until I am almost stopped if I am running the A/C.

I have never had a car that had a knock or pinging in the engine so I got some mechanic buddies of mine to drive the car. The people who have sat in my car and have driven it to hear the sound are 100% confidant that it is not engine pinging or knocking.

We cannot feel the clicking in the pedals or with the engine or anything. It doesnt seem to be connected to the engine at all except that it occurs with the throttle depressed slightly.

The main issue is that it does not happen unless the car I am driving at a steady speed with the pedal pressed slightly, so it is really difficult to actually pinpoint where it is coming from.

Anyone ever heard of this happening? It is really annoying sometimes as I am working a delivery job over this summer.

 

What year D16Y8 is the intake manifold from? '96-'98 or '99-'00?

It was from a 99. Had to plug the A.I.R. holes with JB.

 

Is the sound heard only when the transmission is in gear or also in neutral?

 

Most of the times, it is only when the transmission is in gear, however, when the A/C is running, it will stay on for a little while even after I take it out of gear.

I was having an issue not too long ago with a punctured CV shaft boot. The boot had been punctured before the IM was installed. I replaced the CV shaft (the passenger side) shortly after the IM job.

The CV shaft that I replaced it with isnt very good though (it is remanufactured) it clunks around left turns. I had been wondering if the torn CV shaft could have caused damage to my transmission, primarily because I do not know how long the boot had been damaged, it could have been like that for months.

I helped my mechanic install the new shaft though, and we couldnt see anything wrong from the outside of the tranny.

If there any maintenance that I could/should be doing on the tranny? I have never owned a manual before, not sure what sort of work you are supposed to do on them.

 

If the CV joint clunks when you make turns, then it's bad. Replace it and go from there.

 

just make shure trans is full use motor oil

 

Its the third cv shaft that I have put into the thing. The first replacement was bad, still clicked. This one clicks etc etc. I am going to have a new one put in but the parts store said I should make sure the motor mounts are OK before I get another CV shaft, they thought there might be shaft play causing the shaft to clunk. How can one tell if the motor mounts are bad? I cant move the engine around by hand. The passenger side mount looks like the internal rubber material is sort of cracking.

 

Maybe the other side axle is the one that clunks?
