I might buy this off a friend but it has no VIN on it so I can verify its history.

I need to make sure its a 96-00 EX tranny.
Thanks!

Looks like '92 - '95 to me, no holes for a VIN tag and I don't see the bolts for the shift fork detents ('96 - '00 had 3 external bolts for detents, '92 - '95 had a different setup where the detent ball and spring were part of the shift forks.)

There will be a stamp cast in the case on the passenger's side above the axle seal, if it says A000 its a CX/DX/VX/LX tranny, if it says B000 then its an EX/Si/HX tranny (thats right, the long geared, pretty much worthless HX tranny uses a big bearing case)

I can confirm my 1998 EX came with an S40-K4F. That sticker is definitely on '96-'00 EX transmissions. It's not on transmissions factory mated to D16Y7s (characters on those aren't K4F).

Walked out to the garage to check...

The '96-'00 is snap ringed in, so I couldn't easily lift off the bell housing. The '92-'95 one wasn't, so I took a photo of it on it's side, where the sticker is on '96-'00 trannys.

I don't think all 1996+ transmissions have the VIN. It could be a year to year thing.
