Default spark plugs white! Too much timing???

I have a 96 hx civic 5 speed. I have been hearing slight pinging between 1500-2000 rpms under light load. I just did the major 100k maintenance routine. Notice the spark plug ground electrodes (top arching piece of spark plugs) are white and the center electrode is slightly eroded for lack of a better word. I know this means a lean condition or too much timing. The Base ignition timing was 14 degrees BTDC when i checked it. The manual says 12 + or - 2 degrees. I retarded it to about 11 degrees to see if this helps. Anyone else have this problem? My fuel filter only has about 10k miles on it.
