Default Rear tire "Heel and Toe" wear common on 8th gen Civic?

Re: 07 EX

For anyone who doesn't know what Heel and Toe tire wear is, it looks almost like someone sanded a spot down into your tire with a belt sander. It only happens in a couple of places on the tire, but it goes super deep, even when the rest of the tread wears normally. Some smartass might look at it and say you did a 1/2 mile long panic stop!

From some google research, it looks like this happens more often with low profile tires on the rear of the car.

I'm just running the stock 16" alloy wheel with 205/55 R16. I'm replacing all 4 tires now at 30K with some Michelin Hydroedge... at $170 a tire installed, I want them to last a loooooong time.

I used to think I should just run the front tires bald and keep the lightly worn rears in place (which I can do on my CRX and minivan), but now it looks like that is exactly the wrong strategy with this car.

Is anyone else having a problem with abnormal rear tire wear?

Take it to your dealership. There is TSB for replacing the rear control arms (which cause awful tire wear). They probably won't replace your tires, but they'll probably do the arms at no cost.

Thanks guys!

By the info on that TSB it looks like I'm outside the warranty for the tires (probably not worth the hassle) But at least I now know there is something that can mitigate this in the future... and I found out just in time so I can get the tires back to show the dealer!

Is 170 per tire installed alot? Tires won't last a loooooooong time as you put it, they are a wear item. If you got 30k that's pretty good. I've never gotten more than 10k out of a set of tires for anything I've ever owned. You should put some money aside for tires, rubber on concrete is not a good combo.

This is 2010 nothing is cheap. I just had $1700 taken out of my paycheck for taxes. Tire rack has some right now for 76 bucks plus 15 to ship and 20 for someone to mount it would be 111

These are the Michelin HydroEdges... and I correct myself, they are about $155 installed ($133 + installation). Where as most tires have a wear rating of 200-400, these are rated 800. Low rolling resistance. They are one of the top rated tires on Tire Rack too.

No offense but 133 ea. is a freaking ripoff for tires. You can great tires in that size for about 80-90 each.

Yep, they might be. We'll see.

Hey alphalanos, since you are in Nigeria, I wired this guy some money, and he was supposed to wire me back alot more money, but I haven't heard from him since. If I wired you a bunch of money to, could you help?

as mentioned, if you still have the warranty on the car, take it in to the dealer to get the rear camber arms replaced. if i remember right, the new arms have the letter s stamped into them, while the old ones don't. 30k is a decent amount of miles to get outta the stock tires btw, i got like 20k out of mine haha (on my si).
