98 had the 4-1 header, 4.7 final drive and better spec camshafts. its worth the extra 600 IMO because dumb asses seem to think the header alone is worth $300 anyway
the engines have to be converted to run usdm in most states. some states dislike 4 digit stamps which means you need a 1 or 5 stamp and the usdm conversion. you will need a usdm obd2 oil pump, cfs sensor, vtec solenoid and a way to plumb the evap
I would say its worth it for the gearing. I have a 94 Civic with a JDM GSR swap and passed emissions fine in WA state.
if you just want a reliable motor you aren't switching parts on, DO, the extra hp the R engine has makes it a wonderful DD engine. mpg is also roughly the same
Go for the ITR motor. The transmission alone makes it worth it. The gearing on a GSR tranny just seems to be too long for such a narrow powerband.
You guys are not answering his question.... He wants to know which one is better for DDing such as which one saves more gas or what would be easier to pass smog and other things of that sort NOT which one makes better performance....
i've had all these setups in civics. stock for stock the itr motors are definately nicer than the gsr, altough the gsr is no slouch. is it worth the extra cash? i think so, but it depends on you. the 96 spec has a longer final drive and therefore will sound less busy cruising at 60-65 mph. the 98 spec although a little more expensive has the shorter final drive, jdm 4-1 header and slightly better cams, makes a little more power, feels a little quicker. i daily drove a ek w 96 spec ITR for about 2 years and it was my favorite setup of any car i've ever had.

Are you the OP's mouthpiece or something? Well hell if you want whats best for a daily driver go buy an LS motor which has the longest gearing and uses 87 octane vice premium.
