im new to this forum and hondas in general. i bought a 99 accord with 275k on the motor and it runs great i cant believe the deal i got.

its the 2.3 vtec i believe

SOMETIMES when the motor is cold it will fire right up but after a few seconds it will start to spit and sputter. it will do this for a few minutes and revving it up doesnt really make and changes to it

after a couple minutes(5 or so) im thinking the t-stat opens? and she purrs like a kitten.

i wanna say its something due to emissions. i dont have much of a clue about these things though, i have 5 toyota trucks and have only worked on them, diesels and chevys in my life.

any help would be greatly appreciated. if it has somethign to do with emissions can i rip it off and block it off??

i know barely anything about obdII but it seems way smarter than me

 

Sounds like it could possibly be a head gasket going out, have you done a compression test?

 

really? thats the last thing i would have thought.

no i havent, i just got the car.

the fact that it only does it once in a while and after a certain point the idle speed increases slightly and the idle smooths right out - every time, made me think it was some emissions junk. and it hase 275k on it. thats quite a bit

 

This is a few days old so sorry for bringing it back up. Is the CEL light on or come on? Even if it is not, take it to a parts store and ask them to scan it. If they find anything that will help. I can only guess without any codes and that will take time and some money.
