Default Tial project- open water

I have been contracted by Tial Products to handle their special projects welding. Lots of cools stuff coming thru the door to weld for them but here is some really trick stuff I wanted to share.

These water jackets are cnc machined out of stainless steel . There are 2 parts for one turbine housing which is stainless steel as well. These 2 halves get welded together and then welded to the housing becoming a jacket for water circulation.

These are for a twin engine , twin turbo per engine, offshore racing power boat!

Enjoy...Ive been welding for 12 hours and its time to go man something other than a torch.

Such beautiful turbine housings ruined with terrible welding.

That is ****ing bad ***. Welds look killer. I don't even want to know how many hours of machine time they have in each of those jacket halves.

Considering the size of the piece of billet they started with, plus how hard stainless is on tooling... I can imagine alot. Programming was probably the hardest part due to toolwear compensation. Machining took a long time since you cant run stainless with high feed rates. Plus to get that machined look, they purposely had to program a small endmill to finish the piece like that

looks like fun stuff to weld. Great looking beads too.

What seals the inside of those tabs on the perimeter? did you weld in there?

yea, 304 is a huge bitch to bandsaw blades and tooling. We ran some 304 parts awhile back... To cut through 3" 304ss billet blanks, something like 500 cuts took 5 blades on a big industrial water cooled bandsaw (adjustable cut rate)

Tooling was a bitch too, 204ss eats through carbide like butter. I think every 100 cycles or so we needed new endmills and what not

is there any type of locator that centers the exhaust housing in the jacket?

Also Im sure htat tial has done their research but Im wondering how well this works; as in what kind of longevity does that actually exh housing have when submerged in water with those kinds of temperatures?

absolutely amazing machining and welding, I could only wish to get half as good one day

The logevity is as long as corrosion permits. It's common practice to jacket the turbine housings of turbos that will be in the engine compartment of a boat to keep the heat down. We have giant Garrett units that we use at CAT on our marine engines with water cooled turbines.
