Default Alright This sucks... Repeatedly torn cv boot Cause?

Okay, does anyone have any ideas for this one? I just replaced both of my front axles do to torn cv boot. Now I drove from Iowa to Florida and the inner cv boot is torn again already. I am new to working on cars but I know they last longer than that ha ha! So while I'm changing the axle out (lifetime warranty), is there something I can look for or feel for while it's all apart. I hate changing axles no fun.

From what I can see now, nothing is rubbing, my tranny feels fine, shifts really smooth, only reverse grinds once and a while a bit, new shocks, new tie rods, new ball joints, skunk 2 Camber kit, ummmm... I think that's it for stuff I have done myself. All done under a month ago.

Specs:

1991 ED Civic Si
B18a1
Dropped about three or so inches??

Thanks!

check your boots with your wheels at full steer both ways.....you might be hitting/rubbing when the wheels are at a full turn, and make sure you check with the suspension fully loaded, not on jacks.

Also....which boot is ripping? One by the tranny or one by the hub?

The inner cv boot, by the tranny. I will have to do that. I've got it apart already now, about to run and exchange it for the new one. One thought I had was, being lowered, would that change in angles put any more stress on it or something like that? It was set that low when I bought it. On'ce I get a chance I might bring it up on or two inches since my fender is eating my tires! Anyway, Just thinking of what would cause repeatedly the same thing to happen like this. I couldn't possibly have to much hp for them, it's just a stock ls with a CAI right now.

excessive HP wont eat your boots just your axles themselves. Extreme angles can def cause the boot to tear quickly, if you don't like it that low definately raise it back up, It can do nothing but help you.

I'm leaning towards the fact that the car is as low as it is.

Alright that makes sense, I have adjustable Drop Zone coilovers, (nothing fancy) but yeah, I'm not so much about the 2 inches of oil pan clearance thing ha ha! I bought the car that way. So that is a likely culprit then, I would put that as the most likely cause, I don't see how anything could be rubbing but I will check. Everything is bolted up correctly and tight. I'll try this new axle for a while, see if it cuts open before I have the ambition to raise the front end.

Alright... so this sucks too ha ha! I jsut spent three hours swapping axles, and now when I'm driving there is a spine shattering grinding squealing noise ONLY while I'm accellerating through lower gears. 3rd and 4th don't make noise UNLESS I am turning to the right.

I'm frustrated it's late and I'm tired now, so I'm not going to think about it right now but if you have any ideas at all, it has to be something dumb and simple, all I did was swap part A for another part A.

Thanks!

So when your boot tears, is the CV Clamp still attatched? or missing?
If it is missing, it could be your Lower control arm bolt hitting it.
(If there was any work on the front LCA, the bolt may not be all the way in?)
Thats all I could think of.

Did you take the seal off the axle where it goes in the hub,

Integra seals don't fit civic hubs.

Crap, no. Is it just that little metal ring? I've never taken it off on the other ones I put on.

The cv clamp is still on. It just tears open.

that might be your whole problem with the joint tearing. a friend of mine had the same problem. once he replaced the ring with the right one it was golden

ive noticed some newer, cheaper axles use the same generic joint for DA and EF which interferes with the hub ring and needs to be removed.

also the hub ring may be loose and just spinning and ringing around. it will cause weird tinny noises.

as for the original issue, too much cheap grease inside the boot is another reason boots tear. basically the grease liquefies and clumps up and just spins in the boot and it acts like a weight inside and stretching the boot. i dunno if theres really a solution other than repacking the cheap boot with decent synthetic high temp grease and apply just enough thats needed.

Wow, I never thought there was so much to know about just the cv boot ha ha! I have to say I'm not 100% on what ring you guys are talking about? The one that rests on the wheel bearing like around the inner side of it? I know it's a lot to ask but does anyone have pics? The axles are lifetime warranty ones from Autozone so probably jsut thier brand name, I don't have money for the nice stuff just yet. Thanks a ton for all the info. Ended up at the beach today so tearing it apart tomorrow.

Dang it, you know what I even looked at that little thing and wondered what it was for and why it was so loose in there. I'll take a pic to put up here later to make this thread a little more useful for fellow beginners!

Thanks!

it has nothing to do with your inner CV boot ripping of course.
