Default 96 Civic EX Sedan: Random loss of power...

Recently, we swapped out our O2 sensor for a new one we purchased on eBay. As well, we repaired some broken wires leading into both front doors. However, the car now will randomly lose power - sometimes completely and will not accelerate despite having the pedal pushed half way, OR sometimes still having some power, accelerating slowly, but "bursting" (revs jumping slightly) at times. Is it the fault of the new O2 sensor we purchased or does it have something to do with the spark plugs/wires?

Any CEL codes?

With these kinds of symptoms, always start with a basic tune up (plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, ignition timing).

No, I had a CEL before with the old O2 sensor. With the new one, it's gone. Also, I want to know what to replace before buying it, as we had to get our alternator rebuilt (for the second time) and would like to replace the bare minimum.

What's the best way to test the five things you mentioned?

Inspect the spark plugs, wires, and the contact points inside the cap and on the rotor. If there's any question, just replace the plugs (basic NGK only) because they are pretty cheap. You can clean corrosion from the contact points in the cap and on rotor if wear is not too excessive.

Use a multimeter to measure the resistance between the ends of the plug wires. It should not exceed 25k Ohms.

Well, we decided to work in reverse first... disconnected the O2 sensor and, turns out, it's causing problems...

Yeah, this was my first time purchasing automotive parts off eBay. Probably won't do it again, unless it's something cheaper and less important.

New question: is the function of the O2 sensor dependent only on the engine, or the transmission as well? My transmission isn't "stock"...
