Just to start I searched and didn't find what I was looking for. I'm wondering what is going to be more durable, single stage or base and primer? I've heard people say that single stage usually isn't as good a finish, but it can be more durable, anyone have any experience w/this? Thanks.

 

in my opinion...

single stage can be just as vibrant and/or durable as a 2 stage. it all depends on the quality of the product you bought and the prep work done.

2 stage paint isnt base and primer, its basecoat/clearcoat, thats the difference, single stage is basecoat combined with a clearcoat. Both can yield amazingly great finishes, 2 stage is much easier to take care of and generally lasts longer.

 

Yeah, that's what I meant, base and clear. So two stage is going to last longer?

I know you can get a good finish w/single stage, I want to know which is going to last longer/be more durable. If the paint is the same quality, comparing single stage and 2 stage, the 2 stage is going to last longer? Thanks.

 

paint defects that occur to single stage paint, affect the basecoat directly, where as in 2 stage paint most defects or damage that occurs happens usually to the clear coat. Clear coat is much more easily corrected using sanding and buffing, although you can do the same with single stage, but only if you use regular colors, metallics and pearls will flip if you do any sort of paint correction on them. Clear coat drys like glass, so thats the way you have to think of it.
