Default How do you properly detail PY paint

Hey all, I recently purchased a 2000 PY ITR and the paint could use some love. Considering that the PY is a single stage paint I want to make sure to do this properly. There are areas on the car which are faded and I want to see if I can bring it back.

I have the zaino set which includes the following:

ZFX™ Flash Cure Accelerator Additive
Z-2 PRO™ Show Car Polish for Clear Coated Car Finishes
Z-5 PRO™ Show Car Polish for Swirl Marks and Fine Scratches
Z-6™ Ultra Clean Gloss Enhancer Spray
Z-7™ Show Car Wash
Z-18™ ClayBar

I will follow the zaino instruction, which states to wash it with Dawn dish soap first and then to clay the entire car, then wash with Z-7 show car wash. Then to use the polishes.

I am considering making the first few coats with ZFX flash cure accelerator additive with Z-5 PRO show car polish for swirl marks and fine scratches. About 3 coats of that with the Z-6 Ultra Clean Gloss Enhancer Spray in between each coat and then 3-4 coats of Z-2 PRO show car polish for clear coated car finishes....

But should I even use the Z-2 PRO show car polish for clean coated car finishes, since there is no separate clear coat for PY paint.

Thanks for reading my bable.

i say skip the Z-2 and just use the 5 pro. I did my PY a few weeks ago. All Megs stuff, i washed it, clay bar, polishing compound then wax. It looks way better then before and has that reflective shine to it not a dull dry like. Make sure your using a buffer/polisher though for a better finish also to save your arm from being sore the next few days hehe.

I would use a buffer/polisher but I am a bit scared to create more swirl marks if I apply too much pressure. I will hopefully do this in the next few weeks.

Never EVER use Dawn or any other dish soap on a car. Other than that, that list looks like alot of work.

I just wash with a car brand soap, clay bar and wax. Nothing more.

OP, where are you located?

Being a single stage paint actually works in your benefit in terms of trying to recover it. It works more like a sponge and will react great to even the simplest of correction methods.

Check out my hood, this was after a simple wash and one solid coat of Meguiars sealer:

The dawn dish soap actually servese a purpose. It's for stripping all the wax and polish off the car so you can start "blank canvas". Then you can clay bar, polish then wax.

The OEM paint is difficult to work with. Most of my car has been re-sprayed with multiple-stage paint, except for the hood and roof which have permanent water marks that I can't seem to remove.

So what was your method of detailing?

Yes Dawn helps create a blank canvas, it should only be used as the wash and only wash before you start detailing the car.

I will post before and after pictures. Hopefully this will be done this month.

If you are afraid of leaving buffer trails I would suggest you get a random orbital buffer such as the Porter Cable 7424 - they are very safe to use and it's almost impossible to mess up the paint with them.

You don't have to do anything different when detailing single stage paint vs. base coat/clear coat. Wash your buffer pads shortly after using them so the yellow paint doesn't get stuck in them.

Okay so there is a problem with my paint, I clayed it and now I am sitting down to do the polishing with the ZFX along with Z5 polish. The first minute I touch the car with the polish, it starts removing the paint..... I stopped after doing the top of the car, but it appears to be removing the paint...

Any opinion

What machine are you using? Do you have experience buffing a car? If not, I would be careful selecting which buffer to use and do your research in the detailing forum.

Single stage paint does show up on the pad, it's normal. That's why I said,
"Wash your buffer pads shortly after using them so the yellow paint doesn't get stuck in them."

No machine, all done by hand. I was following the direction of Zaino which states to go back and forth on pieces such as the roof, hood and trunk. Up and down on doors and fenders.

I ended up doing the whole car, it did show yellow paint but I saw the shine come through.
