my vtec comes in right on 5700 but tops out right on 8400

On the dyno mine hit fuel cut at 8,590 with the tach registering around 8,800rpms. VTEC engagement varies between 5.6-5.8k.
Should be around 8600 I believe.

anything i can do about this?

ITR tach's are always off. You can get it calibrated, but it doesn't really matter. Fuel cut-off is at around 8650 rpm, actual, not indicated....
My tach is actually pretty acurate. You can test it by (after your car is warmed up...) hit the gas and tap the rev limiter... that's how I figured out where mine was, indicated at least.

IIRC, VTEC engagement is 5700 and fuel cut activates at 8500. It doesn't matter what your tach say as it's not important. It your's his fuel cut at 8400 indicated then shift right before then, if it says 10k for 8500ish then shift just before that. The one displaying 10k will not be faster.
this might be a dumb Q, but how do you know when fuel cutoff occurs? do you feel just a sudden loss of power --- or can you tell from a dyno?
