96 f22 keeps popping out of gear then locked...HELP!
so i was driving home yesterday and my car kept popping out of 5th gear so i was riding in 4th most of the way and every once in a while shifting into 5th only for it to pop out after about a minute. then when i was slowing down once i felt and heard this grinding sound and the car slowing down on its own....when i tried to speed up it felt like i was pulling a boat behind me then as soon as i put it in 4th and let off the cluck it made a sound like it was being forced into gear then the motor cut off and i couldnt move the shifter at all...then i finally got the shifter out of 4th but it wont go into any other gear and now i can start my car but as soon as i let the clutch up the car stalls no matter what gear its in or how much gas i'm giving it. any thoughts?
The teeth on the 5th gear is stripped. Had the same problem with my dads 'yota. The synchros fail, then the gear strips/rounds off. Once the teeth are stripped/rounded the car will not stay in that gear. Sounds like some metal got into one of the bearing surfaces and locked up one of the transmission shafts. One shaft locks, all the others will as the gears are in constant mesh.
I doubt you "ran out" or transmission oil. A car doesn't use it uless its leaking (which in a 5 speed is failry uncommon) then possibly. More than likely your problem is foreign object damage related to the failure of the synchros or the gear itself. If your transmission is very high mileage or shifted harshly you are better off replacing it. Bearings inside are likely spun/seized.

now when u say new transmission do u mean clutch, flywheel, throw out bearing, pressure plate, etc or the actually transmission that bolts to the side of the motor as in the whole thing?
I had the transmission seize up on an Integra because of a lack of oil. It was due to the throw out bearing breaking and throwing a chunk of metal into the part of the bell-housing that mates to the trans case. Pretty weird and uncommon situation I know. The trans is definitely seized or locked up from metal in some way though. I guess it was wrong of me to assume it was lubrication related (Based on my experience) I agree in that you will need another transmission. I've seen them and bought one for a 94 Accord 5 spd for around $300
When I say transmisson I mean entire transmission.
The clutch assembly (throwout bearings, pressure plate, clutch disc etc) are an entirely separate assembly that is actually attached to the flywheel, which is bolted on to the tranny side of the crank. The transmission mates with the clutch friction disc via male splined shaft on the tranny and a female splined hole in the friction disc of the clutch. (Power is transferred between the two when the friction material of the clutch locks with the flywheel surface.) Making it a separate assembly from the actual transmission.
Replace them while the tranny is off though, might as well because separating the two is a real pain in the butt, especially with the motor in the car.
Bottom line, replace your tranny.
