K20z1 chatter at start up...???
Are these k20z1 known for maybe bad oil pumps? At start up there is just a moment of harsh chatter, VERY loud!! Any ideas? Sounds like main bearing chatter or something horrible, but after a second its gone and not even a hint of a ticking noise.?????
could be loose valve clearances.. could also be a tensioner going bad.. never had anyone come in with a bad oil pump on a z1.. especially in stock form..
yes, it is quite odd.. sounds almost like a motor without any oil at first, maybe for only two second max, then as quiet as the day it was manufactured...? Ill have to check that clearence out soon.. I do not want this thing to tank on me, I just traded my WRX for it wednesday.
are the Z1 known for any problems or anything out of the ordinary?

I have had, as a Honda Technicien, problems with premature wear on exhaust cams on the k series motors K20, K24, in Accord, CRV and EP3 not sure if this was fixed in the newer gen motors. This caused a noise like you described not only at start up but all the time. Not all motors have these bad cams, these cams seem to groove in as bad as 1/16", the problem seems to be a flaw in the casting, simply adjusting the valves does nothing to resolve the noise since it is adjusted at the cams lowest point, the groove occures at the top of the lobe. To see if the cams is damaged the rocker carier most be removed for inspection.
Start with adjusting the valves, if the noise is still there i suggest inspecting the cams for damage, no garranty this is your problem but good luck.
Just wanted to know what car the Z1 come in?

Theres no need to adjust the valves or adjust anything for that matter.
He is talking about the sound you hear for a split second when you first start the car before oil can pressurize and circulate thru the engine. Every B, F and K series vehicle I have had has done it.
Its a K20z1 (03 RSX Type S), yes tokyo thats exactly what it sounds like. Like the top end has no oil at all then after not even two seconds its is a quiet as it can possibly be and there is no more noise at all. is there any solution to the problem?? Idk its sounds SOOOO horrible when I start the car, like someone is shaking a metal box of rocks under the hood lol. Is there a over sized oil pump or anything out there? Or should I find a diff K series head?
and Ive read sucj contradicting info on the K's where does the Z1 stack up against the Z3 and A's?

I was unaware that the K20Z1 motor was equipped in the 2003 RSX-S. I think that would be my first worry, lol. I believe you have an A2 my friend.

This has been covered, I think on K20a.org... or maybe here on HT..., the issue was with z1 and z3. Some type of oil pressure issue, especially when the motor's been sitting in cold temperature for awhile.
Tatmonster & Jseou. Yea sorry to throw in an irregularity but it's a 01/03 manufactured date with a K20Z1. I guess I could give you the vin if you really feel like I'm lying?
cloumep. I there a solution? Possibly an oversized oil pump or anything else needed?

not sure about solution, because the posts/replies on this topic were all over the place and some said they never even notice the issue/noise and some do..., and if you search the youtube, you'd see some vid/sound clip on this and I actually couldn't tell any serious/loud sound...
I have had my z3 since January and during the cold winters in Chicago, I never really noticed any type of noise. But then again, I hear my exhaust starting up when I start the motor...
I have a kind of similar problem. My car starts up fine but today i noticed the vtec kicking in unusually hard and last time it did that i brought it in and i had almost no oil. i check ed my dipstick today and it was pretty low. What could be the cause of that? Its happened twice already
^^ Keep it on topic please or start a new thread.
OP - sounds to me like you might have a spun bearing. I would send a sample of your oil to Blackstone Labs for an oil analysis ($20) and this will give you an indication of which metals are present in your oil. This could be an indicator of bearing wear.
Also - 02-04 RSX have the K20a2 motor, 05-06 has the K20z1.
How well do you know the history of the car? Sounds like someone did an engine swap and the "new" engine may be messed up.
