Icon2 Car chooses not to start sometimes. Starter Going bad?

91 dx B16a

I hate to start another 'my car wont start' thread.. but in the past two weeks.. sometimes my car just will not start. No CEL. Battery is fine. The only distinct chracteristic of my problem is that MOST times when i turn the key and it doesn't want to start I hear a loud knock from the bay.. possibly the starter trying to engage?

Still bump starts.. and starts via key most of the time.. anyone have a similar experience?

possibly the starter going bad?

Hold the key in the start position when its not starting. have someone smack the starter solenoid and see is that work. Mine is doing the same thing. My starter is bad.

Thanks for the info guys, first of all.. if my timing was off 5 teeth I think I would be hsving worse problems.. I do think that I am off A tooth though because I have a real bad lag between 4-6k and another member said he had the same problem while off a tooth .. I will go listen for the two clicks next time I start her up though.. to be honest I have never heard any clicks.. I just listen for my fuel pump to prime..and to clarify.. the starter solenoid is part of the starter? I just drove home this morning and she started as strong as ever.. Im also leaning towards starter though. I really appreciate the info guys.. anyone else feel free to add your .02

auto and manual from 90-93 will work, and only manual starters from 94+ will work.

When you turn the key over if you hear one single click and that is it, then it is definitely your starter. The Bendix is getting jammed into the flywheel. You have to peck only starter underneath the starter next to the flywheel. Well clicking it over. It happened to me tonight and I finally got it started. But the secret is to be sure and whack it in the right spot. Underneath the starter as close to the flywheel as you can get.
