CRX has a jumpy tach, car is running fine
1.5 D series, AT, running fine, idles and revs up fine. the stock tach would jump around by itself. i purchased a 2nd tach/cluster, and that tach is not doing anything (junkyard, so of course it may be just dead). i hooked up a good stand alone tach to the blue wire coming off the distributor (plus power/ground), and no rev readout. so, is this a bad igniter? in my case, it's not reading the revs correctly, but it is running fine.
any other tests i need to do? thanks in advance.

thanks guys...
damm, $130.00 from honda. any other good source for these, not the generic advance auto parts/pep boys version? thanks...

junk yard. all obd0 d sereis ignitors are the same. i think even the obd0 b's are the same. its been a while since i had to replace one. pretty easy job though. you can usually find dual point dizzys for cheap. definaly cheaper then 130
...or you could pay the money and not worry about spending it again when that one dies from age.
Since it's going to be from roughly the same year!

i'd buy new...our local junkyard has no dizzy's in the cars that will swap over to mine anyways.
the distributor in mine is 4 years old/new. working 100%,, just improper tach readout for now due to a failing igniter? there has to be an OEM source for a d15 igniter that compares to the OEM.

it will eventually get worse.
but try to check the connections of the terminals to the ignitor. ive actually heard of people jiggling it to make a better contact fixing the issue.
a new ignitor is $82 on majestic. still a lot of money, better to just buy a new one from distributor king anyway.

When my tach jumped up and down like that I was under the assumption that it was a failing alternator because my interior lights would dim and it would actually kill the battery. Only happened with all the accesories on though. Wipers, bright lights, rear defrost, fan on high. I think it was just too much draw on the system. Has not done that since.

i swapped out the gauge cluster, and even tested it directly from the dizzy with a stand alone tachometer...
i just hit the junkyard again today (since i drove right by it for something else). looked out of curiousity, and there are no distributors on ANY honda or acura out there...lol.
i'll open it up and take a look inside, i know the dizzy is around 4 years old. car runs perfect, though...i'll probably clean up the igniter and it's connections.
thanks.

maybe i should have jumped into my dizzy instead of the post, but at least it's here for the next reader. ah, the joy of simple and smart Honda design.
alright, i took my distributor off, opened it up, and what do i see? the blue wire for the tach signal, basically just touching the end of the igniter/ignitor. notice the angle they bend it at to install it into the distributor...so i push it back on, and crimp it down tight (pic of igniter posted below). clean up the dizzy inside and out, put it all back together, and tach is working perfectly. glad i took the 10 minutes to look inside, before i ordered the ignitor from hondapartsnow or eBay (new OEM) for $90. shipped. 06302-PT2-000 for future reference. avoid the storefront dealer.

thanks for the help, HT. and this thread: https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/replacing-ignition-control-module-igniter-2581960/
