Default civic sedan steering problem

my car is a dd and everything is in good shape in the steering. tie rods tight, no rocking. ball joints all ok.

problem 1)the steering will go from really light like a corolla for about 2 weeks, then to about normal responsive new acuras for about 2 weeks, then back to light again etc.

problem 2) it seems like the car would not hold its alignment (i would have to get an alignment almost every 2 months) it drives straight, but my steering wheel would be off centered all by itself

i was wondeirng is this something to do with my power steering pump? power steering rack? maybe change the power steering fluid? < the fluid seems to be level, no leaks and pump makes no sound

How many miles are on the car?
How old is the power steering fluid?
It may be time for a fluid change. I noticed quite a difference after I flushed my PS system.

About the wheel becoming out of alignment all by itself, that's kinda weird. How far out of alignment does it get? (in degrees)

Sounds like something is loose between the steering rack and the wheel. Check the nuts and bolts associated with the steering joints under the dash. Also check the Rack Guide Adjustment.

I'll poke around a bit more in the morning.

i don't think its related to power steering.

tonight i tried messing with the tie rod, turning it more toed out and the steering got heavier, which is good. but now my steering wheel vibrates at hwy speeds. it didn't do that before. so i got my tires rebalanced, same problem. can messing with the tie rods do anything with the vibration?.

You probably put your car out of alignment. Get that checked and corrected.

Not sure what the deal is with your steering wheel.. that's just strange.

Anyhow, how many miles are on your car? When did you last replace your brake calipers? I used to have some "mysterious" freeway shudder. I rebalanced my tires a few times, had alignment done a couple times, etc etc and couldn't figure out what the deal was. Well, when installing my SS brake lines, I snapped the bleed screw off the passenger side caliper. I went ahead and bought new calipers, one for each side, and what do ya know?! No more mysterious freeway shudder!! So, check that out, too.

90,000km

shouldnt be the brake calipers. i didn't touch the brake stuff since i got my brakes changed and everything was normal after the brake change.

i've had alignments done every 2 months now and the cost is started to add up.if I don't get somethng changed. its going to keep losing its alignment.

I would do all this. Then maybe consider replacing my calipers.
