Scratched Engine bearings ? ?
I recently had to rebuild a turbo that was on my ek9 due to it having to high oil pressure. At first i was just going to change the oil seal, but being me i through i might as well just take the whole thing apart and inspect it.
When i striped it i noticed quite a few scratches on the bearing housing of the turbo where the bearing sits. The exhaust side was the worst with scratches that where deep that you could get you finger nail into. So i replaced the bearing housing and rebuilt the turbo with a garrett rebuild kit.
Whats buging me is that there was scratches inside the bearing housing which to me must have been caused by bits of crap in the oil. So now i'm thinking are my engine bearing screwed ? ? I have a oil pressure gauge in my car and the pressure is really good. I would imagine if my bearings were screwed that would'nt be the case and my oil pressure would be quite low.
What do you guys think ?
Thanks for your time

please look further into what im saying as i havnt had to think about this in a while. i believe oil pressure that is read on your gauge is straight up pump pressure, so you may have good pressure there but your bearings could be seeing less pressure and still be scratched from crap either way. only way to know for sure is to inspect them visually. was it a **** ebay turbo or a good turbo from a name brand compay? i know you said you used a garrett rebuild kit but that doesnt necessarily mean it was a garrett turbo. if you have a **** turbo then your engine bearings may be fine......hard to know without tearing apart the engine to see.
Its a genuine garrett turbo mate. The oil pressure of a engine is created by the bearing clearence and not the pump its self. All the engines i'v come across with bearing fairlure have all had really low oil pressure specially at idle with the oil light coming on.
I know what your saying about the only way of telling is to inspect them which i mite do on saturday for piece of mind.
The engine is a freshly built b16 with new rings, bearing, seals, ect....
I rebuilt the turbo just before its second oil change. When i changed the oil i noticed quite a few fine metal bits on the magnetic sump plug. But i guess for its second oil change this would probably be normal anyway ? I'm guessing quite a few of them been from the bearing housing of the turbo with it been a magnetic metal.
Thank you for your reply
