Default Swapping y8 into a 96 DX.

My cousin's d16y7's piston ring is done and he needs a new engine. It's an automatic car, so he'll be using his old tranny. I found 2 engines, a d16y8 and a d16y7. The vtec engine is in the same city, but the y7 is about an hours drive in Arizona.

I don't think my cousin would care if its vtec or not, he just drives the car.. So can I just swap in the vtec engine and its done? Or is there an issue of like different sensors, or a 2pin to 3pin sensors, anything like that I might need.

ORRRR.... I can buy the vtec block, and just use my head from the y7? And it'll be just like I have a complete y7 block, thats ready to drop in and go?

You wont just be able to swap a y8 in and go, there will be wiring.

I would just get a new block, or long block and put everything from the old block onto it.

You could use either a y8/y7 block.

for your situation i'd say using the y8 is just fine. since he just needs an engine and doesn't care about vtec, don't worry about it.

drop in the engine and use the y7's intake manifold, injectors, ecu, etc. and then leave the vtec solenoid and pressure switch unplugged. the compression is almost identical so i don't see the y7 ecu having any trouble running the y8 with y7 intake and ecu.
