timing for B-series motor
cant u set the block to TDC on cylinder one? the b series have lil holes in the cam where u can slide a drill bit thru to hold the cams in place through alil fish eye on both intake and exhaust. look at it its pretty simple to time a b series. crank should have a timing mark on the oil pump housing.
tdc for the block is cyl 1 and 3 at top position, then put the head on and your cam gears should have two little slits on them making sure they are facing each other bolt the cam cap rails down put the timing belt on and rotate the assembly a few times and if the 2 marks align each time they spin around, your motor should be good to go
You should put the belt on starting from the Crank pulley. After that you do the water pump and tensioner. After that you do EXHAUST side next to remove all slack between pulley and exhaust cam and then you intake last. Hope that helps.

Just a quick question in relation to the timing marker;
When checking the timing, my manual says to point the timing light from directly above onto the marker and mark on the pulley.
However, the long marker is at an angle to the engine (i.e. not perfectly vertical). Do I need to point the timing light down the marker at the same angle so they are parallel as such, or do I still point it directly down on top of it.
I'm worried the difference between the two would affect how the timing is set when I do it.
Thanks :-)
