5spd or Auto? Do you look like a Locomotive pulling the Rocky Mtns.?

Rings will burn smoke all the time, valve seats are when shifting gears (usually more noticeable at higher rpms , or once an old mechanic told me)

Getting in there and looking at it. Depending on how bad it is compression test might clue you in as well.

This is correct, allthough if you are seeing black in your fuel injected vehicle it means that it is running rich (too much fuel is being injected and not all is being burned) This will cause your O2 sensor to fail and your "Cat" to plug up

Sounds like valve guides to me, you will next have to do a compression test in your cylinders is the best way to tell, or you can pull spark plugs and pick the worst looking one, but I suggest the compression test as being more accurate.
