Default car slowly died, then started after awhile, then repeated

So i was driving home last night and i started to notice my lights on my dash getting dimmer and my wipers not going as fast as they were before. Didnt pay to much attention to it but it seemed my car was gradualy losing power till it finally started to bogg then died completly. The weird thing was that once it died it was completly dead no lights no hazards and bassicaly seemed like my battery was dead. But after i let it sit for a good 5 minutes i tried starting it again and it was like nothing happend. i was like ok sweet and began driving home once more then the exact same thing happend, everything gradually died....i eventually had my buddy come out to follow me home and he had to jump me like every 2 miles...but it only would happen when my lights were on cuz one of the times it began to die and i turned my lights off and it jumped back up to perfect working order until i turned my lights back on then it began to slowly die out

what do u guys think this is. I was guessing alternator but why would it completly shut down then go back to being normal for a short while?

Clean your battery posts...
Identical symptoms on my wife's Outback last week, cleaned the posts and terminals and all is good.
