Errrrrr, i've been a member on HT at least 3 times, but I made this new account and am sticking to this one. Been out of the honda game for awhile, but now i'm back, and i'm a little unhappy with this problem.

I bought a 93 ex coupe, automatic. Did a whole swap to a d15b vtec, and converted it to a 5 spd, it had grey interior and I swapped it to the black interior. All in one weekend I may add, lol. When I bought the car it had 2 cel's. One for the ect, or engine coolant temp sensor, and one for the vss, and the speedo acted nuts.

Well me being me said forget it, this motor isn't staying in here long, nor is anything else, i'll fix it later.

Well, it's later and it's not fixed, all parts came off of my old 94 ex coupe which got stolen 3 months after I moved to Los Angeles. I gutted it, and swapped everything over to my new 93 coupe.

Long story short, i'm getting a cel code 17 for the vss, i've changed the sensor at least 7 times, changed the speedo head, changed the connector at the vss and the problem persists. I haven't made any attempt at testing the vss circuit due to the fact of not knowing how. If someone could provide me with the flow charts, i'd gladly do it.

I've narrowed it down to it being the ecu or something faulty in the wiring circuit itself. I really need some help on this one.

 

The VSS plug is a very common source of problems. Retrieve a replacement from a junkyard.

 

The owner who had my civic last seriously just connected the damn yellow to blue and vise versa. It took me 3 minutes to fix and voila.

 

Already did that, as my old one was green and corroded. I got a plug from the junkyard over the weekend and it looks almost new, soldered it in about 2 hours ago and took it for a spin and bam, cel popped on again, code 17.

Btw, i'm glad you chimed in RonJ, i've used several of your posts to troubleshoot cars, and it helped a ton, so I guess thanks for you troubleshooting techniques.

 

either you have a bad gear that's located in the tranny (you're basically sol) or you have a problem leading from the VSS to the cluster.

 

Idk bout the vss gear in the trans, the motor and trans was in my old car and I never had a problem with it. Not saying something couldn't have happened. But that was the last thing I had thought of.

The problem from the vss to the cluster makes more sense to me, being that the problem has been there since I bought the car.

 

You could just have a short. The short hits metal once and pops the code and when the code gets popped the ECU keeps the VSS off regardless of if the wire works or not. It could just simply be shorting out and tripping the ECU.

 

if the vss has been replaced try resetting the ecu now

 

I've reset the ecu after every thing i've replaced. It's to the point now that my clock is off by about 8 hours and i'm too lazy to change it now lol.

so this car was a auto to 5 speed, correct?
may want to check for continuity from the speed sensor to the ecu, as a start.
you could also check for voltage drop and double check your grounds too.

 

Ok, so I went and got a brand spankin new vss sensor. Put it in, reset the ecu, again, checked the connections and everything seemed ok. Drove home from work, and the cel came on again. So, I finally got fed up with it and started pokin around the wiring.

I pulled the black plastic covering off at the ecu plug-ins and took a look. I found on connector "A" the #26 pin for the logic ground was taped up, so I took the tape off and found a soldered connection. The logic ground is soldered into the o2 sensor heater wire located at connector "D" pin #14. Which I find odd, being that it should be grounded under the hood at the thermostat housing right? I found a few other connections i'm gonna look into, but the main reason being the vss looks ok.

Only other thing I found was the oil pressure sensor on the back of the block somehow came unplugged. Could this cause a short to the cluster or something and trip the cel?

I did that today and there was continuity, and yes the car was swapped from auto to 5 spd. But the thing is that it got a cel when it was auto for the vss also.


Voltage drop i'm not sure about, and the grounds are all there.
