This is my daily driver and i use the interstate alot. I go to put it in 5th and it feels like its in gear but when i let the clutch out it just makes a grinding sounds and acts like its in neutral..

if you have any ideas what needs to be replaced, please help!

How's the shifting into reverse?

May want to review shifter assembly, rod and bolt for wear.

 

yes i have reverse and it goes in fine..

 

my 3rd gear does this. Every other gear is fine. From time to time it will go into 3rd just fine and doesn't pop out while accelerating.

 

syncros need to be replaced or clutch

 

synchros or teeth on 5th gear are worn out.

 

i think it could be clutch. put another few miles on it and a failing clutch would rear it's ugly head whereas worn syncros wouldn't get much worse.

change mtf while you're at it... magnetic drain plug.

 

clutch is new so i guess its syncros..

i bet this is gonna be expensive to replace, huh?

 

i changed mtf too and theres no metal shavings or anything like that..

 

Same thing happened to a Toyota truck I used to drive. For me it was the Gear Fork. The gear fork broke right next to the set screw that holds the fork onto the actuating shaft. It allows the gear fork to slide on the actuating shaft. It's a simple break around the set screw that makes it so you cant engage 5th but the set screw still pushes the fork into reverse. The thing is that you can get stuck in reverse if this is the problem. Only way to know is to pull it apart.

 

Since there are no metal shavings, I'm banking on the fork!
