Hey has anyone replaced a rear wheel bearing on a 1998 couple EX 4cly? I have the Haynes manual and i cant seem to find any info on replacing it. Is it not covered in that manual?

I picked up the part already and it is a complete bearing and hub with the bolts for the wheel lugs.

Just wondering on how hard the job is?

I helped a friend replace his about 6 months ago, not sure of the exact year but it was a 98-02 4cyl.

-jack up and support rear of car.
-remove wheel
-remove brake caliper
-remove brake caliper bracket
-remove rotor
-un-stake axle nut from spindle
-loosen and remove axle nut
-grab the hub assembly and give it a tug and it should come off, if need be spray some pb blaster or wd-40 on the spindle to loosen and rust that might make it hard to slide off.
-after removing the hub assembly, make sure the inner race from the back side of the bearing came off as well, if not it's probably rusted a bit, spray it some more and use some pliers to work it back and forth, then it should come off.
-reverse to install and do the other side.

those are usually about 150-180 lb-ft. haynes should list that in the torque specs at the beginning of the chapter. DON'T overtorque it. You can rent a torque wrench from most parts stores, but I rarely trust them since most people that rent them don't know how to care for and store a torque wrench properly. I like to turn the hub slowly as I torque the nut so that bearing gets preloaded evenly. makes me feel better anyway... and remember to buy a NEW axle nut and stake it like the stock after you torque it. You may need to go to the dealer for the rear nut. I had trouble finding rear nuts last time i did this. aftermarket parts stores often carry the front nuts but not the rears. they could probably order though.

 

Ok maybe I am blind I cant find where in the Haynes book it lists the torque nor where it says how to change the rear bearing out! Anyone?
