Default drum brake wear problem

car: 98 civic dx hatch

i took of my drums today just to check out my rear brakes, and one of the brake shoes on the right side is worn out almost completely, while the other one still has some pretty good meat left. any suggestions ? should i get a hardware kit ?

one of my friends told me is it the e-brake cable that's sticking or the brake cylinder ?

Could be air in system too. I would replace everything on that side and shoes on the other.

Cable is also suspect. Make sure it released ok.

Is pedal spongy at all?

What's a "Hardware Kit"?

Any other anomalies in system performance? Like surging, pedal pulsing, or pulling to left or right when stopping hard?

You're trying to diag a drum brake issue and don't know what a hardware kit is?

How much life are we talking? Are the shoes adjusted properly?

Drums need to be perfect circles, new shoes for both sides, new hardware, at least rebuilt wheel cylinders, lube the areas that need a small amount of lube, spray lube cables, adjust for a very slight drag, even take it for a drive and re-adjust, or recheck in a week. Flush fresh fluid all the way through, I usually recommend doing one side at a time as to only need to bleed one side of air at a time, makes it easier for most DIYers. Make sure the parking brake cable is not too tight also. It should take a few clicks to hold the car with a small amount of accelleration.

I got it taken care off. The E-brake cable was stuck, so I had to pull it out .. clean it up a little bit and put it back.

Pretty much it was just rusty as hell.

Never heard the term "Hardware Kit" for brakes. What I was looking for is contents of such - as in how complete the kit was? New/rebuilt slave cylinders included? Just shoes? Shoes and springs?

Slave cylinders can rust up inside and still work, but not release correctly.

Hence, my question.

Hardware Kit only has the springs and clips that hold the shoes to the backing plate and the shoes to each other and the self adjuster and other small pieces. Many years ago I use to go to Western Auto to buy the kits and get cheaper Craftsman tools than Sears.
