Default 321 SS tubing or 304 SS piping?

What would you use?

Application is a 3.2L 2JZ with either 2 GT3076Rs or 1 GTX4202R. Either setup will be using the tial v-band turbine housings. The head is a 2JZ-GE vvt-i from an IS300.

I'm trying to decide if I should use 321 SS tubing 1.75" OD from burns stainless or 304 sch 10 pipe from Vibrant.

I'm also trying to decide if I should go with a mild steel exhaust manifold flange or 304 SS flange. The difference in price is trivial. I know than the HKS and Greddy manifold use mild steel flange. Once constructed the manifold will be high heat coated so the rust isn't the issue. I'm trying to figure out of there is any advantage using the mild steel over the SS flange.

This MKIV will see plenty of street, track and dyno time.

TIA
-Joe

I would use mild flange and mild tube if you're going to coat it. Just support the turbo and it will work great and save some weight and fabrication time as well.

^ mild steel tubing is out of the question. The environment that I'll be subjecting this car thru, it wouldn't last a week.

The questions I have are:

321 SS 16 ga. tube or 304 SS sch 10 pipe ?
Mild steel head flange or 304 SS flange ?
Do mild steel head flange have any advantages over 304 SS? If so, what are they?

I can't imagine what kind of enviroment that would be where you know mild steel wont last but can't decide between 321 and 304. Is this a high temprature acid diving submarine? I guess I'll leave that to someone else.

Yes mild steel does have an advantage over 304. It expands far less and will put the manifold under much less stress as it changes temprature, especially if it's going to be coated.

No. Mild steel for the primaries will hold up just fine, especially when coated internally, in fact, they will hold up better than stainless.

You can't say that here. Must be shiny or it won't work on supra /thread.

After seeing that comment, and then seeing that question, you really should listen to what Bailhatch and Dave are telling you.

Mild steel with a correct coating is the way to go .

That's a bad *** vehicle you speak of, I'd like to purchase one.

Wow, you really want to go there? I'd like to see a Civic Hatch run a Texas mile. Nevermind, just try to make it there and back in one piece.

Dave, thanks for the reply. I didn't know that SS warps easier than mild steel. The expansion of the flange is somewhat a concern for me and I've decided to use the mild steel flange. I had a chance to consult Tony Palo @ T1 and he also mentioned that the 321 SS tube will crack eventually and isn't ideal for a street vehicle. So mild steel flange and 304 SS sch 10 pipe are what I'll be using.

The car will be running the Texas mile. A couple of the locals have driven their stock block MKIVs to the mile and have run almost 200 MPH with ~800 WHP and ~700 lb.ft TQ on E85. My goals are to run over 200 MPH and get around the upper 900 WHP and ~800 lb.ft TQ on Methanol and 650+ WHP and 600 lb.ft TQ on 93 octane pump. A large manifold like a MKIV will generate a lot of heat running full tilt for a prolonged period of time and will hold it there for a long time.

I hope your turbo falls off from prolonged periods of being a full tilt douche. xoxo

I would not coat a SS manifold.
