Default A Question for the Experienced

I am switching from boost to N/A, and I have never gone as high end as I would like to this time. I was wondering what the largest bore was, that would be safe, on a stock B16a sleeve? I was also hoping to get some advise on a compression ratio that might suit a large bore on a stock sleeve. I have heard that 82mm is about as big as you want to go on a boosted set-up, does that go for N/A as well? I also need some advise on a good set of cams for the set-up.

SUGGESTIONS PLEASE

My plan was:

B16a block with stock sleeves
82-83mm bore
12.5/1 - 13.0/1 pistons
Eagle rods
All balanced and that

PR3 head
skunk 2 pro valve springs and retainers
Blox B cams
AEM cam-gears
Older style skunk 2 IM
65mm tb
tube intake with v-stack and filter
"Private Label MFG Power Driven" Header in the TRI-Y design

I've seen a few builds on stock sleeves bored out to 83mm, but you really need to be careful. Most people will say 82mm is the most you'd want for stock sleeves.

B18 with stock 81mm bore? Sounds more practical vs trying to bore the B16 for additional displacement which will likely lead to cracked sleeves. Really all depends on your tuning though.

Not boring for the displacement, but I was thinking about 82mm. My block is already bored to 81.5. I just want a precision bore/hone specific to the pistons I buy.

you can rehone again without going up .5mm. I've done that before. Most people go to 81.5 because the original surface had so many miles on it prior to their build

I would just go up to 84 mm. IMO

Ya, I will be getting a sweet deal on the boring though. So I will do at least 82mm. I thought that 84mm would make the cylinder walls too thin?

b20 block means that I need new rods and all, I don't want to spend that moeny on top of all I am already spending.

81,5 or 82mm MAXIMUM. The new bore won't gain any more power, just a better surface to do the build with.

I was thinking that the margins for boost and a real all motor would be about the same. Just wanted some validation. Thanks.

Your only going to make "Real" all motor power going bigger...

Longer stroke, bigger bore will be needed..for all motor..
Otherwise go 81.5mm or 82mm and boost it..

Sell all your b16 crap, and get a ls or b20 block..you'll make more power if you do a lsvtec vs a 81.5mm b16 all motor...i promise.

I have heard of people making over 200whp on stock stroke/sleeves, with 13:1 and a good set of cams and a good tune. Obviously there are some suppoting mods that go with it, but I already have those.

ok.. i dunno where you heard that..

However i'm 84.5mm and at 13.0CR with pro2's.. if i'm making a good bit more then 220whp

and your only making "around 190- 200whp" and you spent just as much to do that..??

really?

Stock stroke and sleeves if you have a good head build and good bottem end build.
On a b16 - if your keeping stock stroke/bore your going to have to go with a lightweight piston / rod combo and at least 11.8+cr
Then your going to have to get some bearings, then the head is going to need to be ported, good manifold, 3'' intake, good header / exhaust combo, good valvetrain upgrade, set of cams.. your going to spend around 1k-2k to just make 200whp, when you could make a good bit more on a bigger motor.. for less???

REALLY?

ok. Goodluck

Well. I want to get 12.5:1 pistons, have Eagle rods, bearings are a given when re-building a motor, the head has skunk2 pro series valve springs and titanium retainers, I have a skunk2 manifold, will be getting a 3" intake, was thinking about the "private label 4-2-1 header, s2p2 cams. Now that being said, I can't just go out and get a b20 block like most people can around the country. There are a limited amount of supplies out here in Idaho. So, "ALL MOTOR" unless you can get me one here for less then $250, then let's just talk about my B16.

Does it have a crank and all the mains? Are they the original ones for the block?

No thanks. I am on budget here. If the car doesn't make the most power in the world then oh well. Staying with the B16 block.....going 82mm.

Are these Blox B's even a decent choice cam for getting 200whp? I am concerned because, all the reviews of cams, that I can find, are pertaining to boost.

Do you have any experience with Pro 1's? I can get a set of B's for cheap right now. That is the only reason I was thinking of running them.
