how hard and how expensive is it to turbo a b or d series engine. and how many estimated hours does it take. is it worth it to boost a non vtec?

 

yes its worth to boost a non vtec and theyre about equally expensive just depends what your goals are and what your budget is. id go with a b series though

 

How many hours does it take to do what? Put a turbo on? Depends on how much experience you have and how much stuff you want to upgrade.

 

ya i heard that b series is definatly the way to because theyre all so universal and reliable.
im tryin to pick one up for about $1500 if i can which would leave me with about $1000 to play with. could i do it for that cheap?

you could boost an ls for about 1000 but ur definetly gonna have to hunt down used parts meaning stay on craigslist as much as you can lol

 

haha no doubt man, and is that including rebuilding the bottom end or JUST the turbo and its plumbing?

 

lol rebuilding the bottom end no way 1000 for a turbo and plumming and chip and tune is pushing it if your planning on getting a jdm swap with low mileage the bottom end should be good i would jus replace all the seals and timing belt and water pump

that all depends on the size of your turbo and the skills of your tuner

 

alright cool thanks for the info. i know alittle about turbos and alittle about hondas but im really interested. i built a muscle car so now i want to get into the more sporty import side to get the best of both worlds ya know?

 

a D would be a lot cheaper if you have 2500 to spend. Get a z6 (~$300), a rod/piston set (~$500), put together a turbo kit (ebay, craigslist) and remember to get a good tune and you'll be good to go.

 

ya i was lookin for a '96 to '98 civic ex with the d16y8. it seemed like a good way to start

misc parts: $2000...clutch, flywheel,hondata ecu, exhaust,etc...

 

damn thats a solid deal and a lot cheaper than i expected

 

ya ive already built an engine but it was a 5.0 302 v8 so it wasnt as expensive to get hp. i rebuilt it for 3200 an got 380 whp from 198 stock hp. i jus think building a turbo civic would be way more fun to build an drive, the v8 was alittle too easy

 

im building the d16y8 right now actually. if your going to build a d series motor take a look at bisimotos wagon build. thats how you should build a d series motor

i would stay with d if i were you. like somebody else said you can pick up a spare d16 for like 300 bucks and you can build it on the side and then swap it in when your done

thats actually not a bad idea i hadnt thought of that i just dont have a place to store/build the engine :/

 

stock 302 is weak sauce my stock z6 turbo beats those on a roll all day long

 

try and get friendly with a shop maybe if not get all the parts you need for the build and then drop the motor and have everything done and then swap the motor back in. but i think its much easier if you can build it on the side. if i were you i would finish up the exterior and interior before you start on the motor tho.

 

D's are a wast of money. just get a k20
