Broken axle - is this common?
Helped a friend diagnose why his AP1 wouldn't move. Basically, the inner hub to the axle shaft is broken somehow.
When letting the clutch out in gear, the driveshaft spun, the axle hub bolted to the diff spun, but the axle shaft itself didn't move. I haven't pulled it entirely apart yet, other than to inspect the bearings and everything looked fine. I thought maybe it had just popped out since the boot looked funny and stretched, and everything inside looked fine; but once everything was back together, the drivetrain reacted the same way.
Looking at an online parts diagram, what seems to have happened is the part that holds the bearings sit on must be splined to accept splines on the shaft. These parts press together, but it seems the splines must have rounded somehow. Is this a common occurrence? Just seemed odd to me that that had happened.
TIA for any input.
