I thought y'all might appreciate this. A guy in our region shot some pics at an event we had in August; and this one got the most raves from our membership:
Here's his explanation of how it was done:
Ok, here is how I did it. I picked a spot where the car would be in the
frame for four consecutive shots. You have to keep the focal length and
exposure the same for each shot and not move the camera between shots.
The great thing about the Olympus E10 is that it has a 4 shot buffer so
I can take either a burst of 4 shots in less then 1.5 seconds or I can
take 4 shots back to back as fast as I can press the shutter.
Now with the magic of Photoshop (or any image program that supports
layers) you'll open the first image and use it as your background image.
Now open each consecutive image and cut and paste the object you need
back to your background image. This will create a new layer with your
pasted selection, which you can move around and match up to the
background image. I made sure that when I cut the car out that I also
got some of the lime marking and surrounding cones. This makes it easier
to match up to the background image. Just do the same for the remaining
pictures. Now just flatten the layers and save it as a jpg.
Or you can load each image as a layer and allow only the car from each
image show through using Photoshop's mask feature. It's a little more
involved this way but would work.
Given that I don't know squat about digicams or Photoshop, I thought this was pretty damn cool.
Happy Friday. Have a
or two on me.

That's a cool post, Casey!
Maybe I should make one collage (sp?) for you where you go through 4 turns... but on the last turn I'll paste your car drifting sideways.
j/k.

That is a very cool shot.
Well, the technique would be the same regardless of perspective.
It might not be as cool looking as that shot from a lower angle though.
Great, now all you have to do is climb on top of the nearest building...

Or just use an SLR on a tripod and expose the same piece of film 4 times.
Matt, who knows what unsharp masking really is.
I prefer nearly getting run over standing at the apex with a 20mm lens.
damn, pretty cool.. but you all shouldn't send cars soo close together.. what if one messes up? that could be a scary accident. hehee. j/k..
that's great, though, to see that.. it really helps in your driving, too. expecially when watching yourself on video.. it's almost like cheating...

Audi guys have been doing this for a while now, but I suspect that this is because they have plenty of money to blow on expensive cameras (I don't know how good an Olympus E10 is). The picture I saw about a year ago (or more) has much closer together images though. Pretty cool.
E10 is a pretty decent digital SLR (if it's the one I'm thinking of)...not to many megapixels but plenty of optical zoom which is more important anyway
Over $1000 though...maybe $1500?

heres another one that was shot last season. Its a large image, sorry. It must have been a big course to have 6 cars on at once.

That course is pretty wide. Wider than Hollywood Park is anyway...
<-- Is looking forward to auto-xing in H-Stock. Gotta be easier than F-Stock.

that is AWESOME! i've skimmed past this post before and thought... whatevers, probably just a special angle or something BOY WAS I WRONG!! this is awesome, At a recent race i found out that this guy i was with has a camera that can take 24 pictures in a matter of a few seconds.... imagine if you could take those 24 pics of you passing someone on the front straight and do exactly what your friend did!!
