Default 97 Starter Removal?

97 Honda prelude auto. I’m pretty sure the starter is bad because the car wouldn’t do anything until I hit the starter with a hammer. Then it almost started. The battery still had power but I jumped it anyway just to make sure.

What exactly do I need to remove to replace the starter? Do I just need to replace the piece that is held on by the two 5” skinny bolts? Or, do I need to replace the entire assembly that is bolted with two 14mm bolts to the tranny?

I would go and look at the new piece at autozone but they have to order it first.

Thanks,
Nick

www.hondahookup.com/manuals

Go there and download the manual. Then, you can just look up stuff like this.

Quick question, what's the best way to get the second bolt (left on the picture). I can't seem to get to it...

It's kind of a pain. You have to remove the battery & tray I believe, and use an extension with a swivel on it to get it on the bolt. This bolt is very difficult to get to.

Actually its easy to remove. Just remove the two long skinny bolts and disassemble the starter while still connected to the tranny. Then the big bolt on left is easy to get to. I used a two foot long breaker bar to remove it .

Installing was more difficult because i did it assembled. I used a deepwell socket, 3" extension and swivel ratchet. I didn't have to remove the battery at all. I did have to push the intake hose out of the way.

Oh very nice, I didn't try that. I guess I'll do that when I get home today. Right now I'm doing the ghetto, hit the starter while cranking to get it to run. HAHA. I think im going to run into the problem of putting the new one in as I have a CAI that I have to maneuver around as well. But I'll try my best.
