Bolts are expensive....
Finding cheaper bolts. Is the best source a hardware store like lowes? Or is it better to just get them all from hondapartscheap.com
Because they are not that cheap
5x16 screw-washers are 2.86$ each

depends on what you are buying bolts for...if you are buying for suspension, drivetrain, anything that is crucial go OEM Honda. Anything else id say its ok to use hardware store bolts.
Bolts can be really expensive but you're paying for quality. For crucial bolts and nuts follow bainz610 advice.
There's a huge difference in strength for various grades of bolts and nuts. Search the internet. There are tables. A good bolt has rolled threads where the threads are created by mechanically displacing the metal. By doing this the grain boundries of the metal are pressed closer together creating more resistance to crack propegation. Also, when tightening a bolt, you subjecting the threads (typically the first 4 threads) to high tension loads. Rolled threads have are "pre-loaded" with compressive loads which means the first few pounds (newtons or whatever) of force on the thread roots bring the threads to a zero load state. Therefore, the bolts can be tightened to higher torques and can experience high axial loadings when in use before failing.
Cut threads on cheap bolts are crap. Good for a deck on your house where the loads are static but not on a Honda.

THere is also different type of bolts like tension load and shear load. We use these in the aircraft industry. Cars are the same way. You never want thread in your hole. The shank of the bolt should extend past the hole, then washers are added then a nut. But in your case you need washers lowes should be fine.

If you can get the Honda part number (try one of the sites in the OEM parts sellers thread posted in the FAQ in this section) then you can figure out the measurements on much Honda hardware.

Theft is wrong. It doesn't matter if you don't agree with their prices.
To top it off, often when I bring up some bolts or bulbs or even sockets to the counter at different local yards, I'll set them on the counter and the guy will tell me to just take them. When I'm charged it's not a lot.
Honestly is the best policy.
We have one local yard that won't let more than one person from your party on the lot at a time because of theft like this.

damn well most junkyards dont really care about bolts and stuff as long as you buy a part that needs bolts.. they just think its part of the item and it sucks if they only let 1 person in at a time.. they is ghey of them well anyways you and your party should go in 1 by 1 so everyone gets in lol...

See, there's a big difference between showing that you picked out something and the guy saying you can have it for free and you stuffing what you picked out into your pocket and just walking out with it. One is a good deal. The other's theft.
Like I said, plenty of yards will see those bolts and just let you have them. So why even hide it?
As for my local yard, if you come in with friends they'll only let one in at a time. So if you want to all get in you'll have to have one guy come in, then wait a few, let the other guy in, and so on and so forth. Generally it's not worth the effort.
OP, good luck with finding the bolts you need.
Words..I wouldn't want to put some HOme depot or lowes hardware bolts in engine or tranmission.. Ouch!
NOFX is right. I work at a local junkyard and really, you can have all the bolts that you want as long as you tell the cashier. If you 'borrow' it, who knows what else you 'borrowed' . Theft is theft no matter how small it is. As for the OP, if its just for your splashguards, a local hardware store will be your quick fix.

The junkyards can give two ***** around here when you "borrow" bolts. They see people do it all the time. Now when it comes to other parts that's a different story that's something I won't just borrow.
If they don't give two ***** about you stealing bolts, then why do you even have to steal them in the first place?
I'm not stealing nothing. Wouldn't we all consider stealing me hiding bolts in lets say my pocket. So what would you consider me walking out with the bolts in my hand or tool bag when they check it? If I came there to grab a decent amount of bolts they would charge me but that's not the case. I only go to the junkyard to get one or two specific bolts.

The so called "BORROWING" = "STEALING". Period.
Wether its a bolt...a bolt is a bolt. What if you had some NICE LUG NUTS and some one just decided to come and borrow them. They're just LUG NUTS right?
As a joke but you guys took it all too serious. Umm not stealing if the owner knows your taking it. Like I said earlier if your going for a good amount of bolts yes they will charge you but I don't; just for a bolt or two and they are fine with that.
If you're HIDING bolts in your pocket, thats theft. Walking out with bolts is theft in your bag is theft. Now if you tell them 'Hey, i've got these bolts in my bag just so you know' and its fine with them, then no, thats not stealing. Case closed. I hate to accuse anyone of theft but thats what it is, no arguing about it. I know you said you were only joking but theft is no joke, especially in the Honda community since our cars are the most stolen. And that's backed up with statistics. I'm sure everyone here has had a bad experience with theft
