99 Civic Replacing Transmission...Any Tips?
I have a 1999 Civic LX 4-door 5-speed (160,000 miles)
I just had the clutch and rear main seal replaced on monday and my transmission still makes a bearing noise when idling ( I thought it was the pilot bearing this whole time, my clutch was slipping too). The noise goes away when I press in the clutch and also makes a fluttering noise at low speed in low gears. After doing research, talking to friends, and talking to the mechanic that replaced my clutch I have diagnosed this to be the input shaft bearing. From what I hear this is a fairly common issue for 96-00 Civics.
I just picked up a fairly low milage EX transmission and will be swapping it out for my busted one tomorrow morning. I also got some Honda MTF and new Axle Nuts (old ones are super rusty). I have the knowledge to do this but I wanted the chance to get advice from some people with more experience with this job. Things to expect, things to watch out for, etc..
I also want to know what is the best thing to use for cleaning the entire transmission before I put it on the car. I sprayed the entire thing down with engine degreaser last night and it has been soaking ever since.
Any help is appreciated.
TIA

oven cleaner works but might be a little bit harsh on the paint. degreaser and a good pressure washer gun will do the trick. expect(if you dont have a transmission jack or a lift) alot of sore muscles, alot of **** in the way when pulling and reinstalling the transmission. it also helps to have a friend or two with you to help put it back in. also the bitch pin is....well a real bitch to remove lol. other than that, make sure before you reinstall the trans to loosen the fill bolt and if you know how clean the inside of the trans and inspect the seals/bolts/etc
yea sounds like a throw out bearing mine is making the same problems you described and my problem is the throw out bearing, when the clutch was replaced that should have been replaced too
The throw out bearing was replaced with the clutch along with the pilot bearing with no resolution. I swapped out the tranny without any problems last weekend. The noise is gone.
