Leaf spring rear end
Got to the track last week after putting a leaf sprung Chrome Moly beam axle in the back of my 3 gen Civic. Only ran a single leaf per side over the axle. Stiffened the rear suspension, extended the wheelbase (about 2 inches) and saved 44 lbs!
Prior to this meet my best 60' was 2.280 but last week I ran 2.189, 2.190 and 2.195. I'm pretty rapped in the results considering it only cost me about $100 to do. Times dropped from 14.3 to 14.1. This was all done on crappy 185/60 x 14 Olympic Javelins.
Next week I'm racing again with a lexan hatch (33lbs saved), alloy bonnet (12lbs saved), vynal (sp) door trims (12lbs saved) and some Yokohama A539's. Hopefully I can run 13's with a B16a with only I/H/E.....

another cheap way to do this with minimal work:
in the early 90's before all the stiff springs and high end suspension stuff cam out, we used to just weld some stock shocks or make some solid bars for the rear suspension.
Was able to drop .3-.4 sec on the 1/4 mile and have consistent 1.8 60fts on slicks. 2.0's on street tires.

Import Auto Salvage has a similar setup on their all motor race car. solid beam rear axle with only springs separating it from the body. you can pick up the *** end with one hand. very nice setup, nothing back there is left stock(aside from the brakes that are mounted on custom spindles now.
