Default What Year is my D16Y8?

I'm rebuilding a D16Y8 I grabbed from an unknown car, and I'm trying to get piston rings, but I'm told the rings are different sizes depending on if it's a 96-98 or 99-00 manufacture. The only markings on the block are as follows:

D16Y8
2786999

Then on the back side:
P2E
1-2

Can anyone tell me what year or year range this engine is from? Or do I have to pull the pistons and measure my rings?

I guess the other question is do these two year ranges actually have different piston rings? I was looking on the Hastings website and they showed different part numbers for 96-98 and 99-00 D16Y8's, but according to the catalogue on hondapartscheap the Honda Part Numbers for rings for a 97 and 99 EX are the same. So I'm kind of confused.

Thanks, this is what I was looking for. Unfortunately there is some new confusion that comes from this. I grabbed this full swap from the junkyard, including the D16Y8 engine and an Si manual transmission.

However, my head is marked P2J-2 and 97, which doesn't even jive with any of the codes shown in this listing. This is a Canadian vehicle/engine, so maybe the codes are somewhat different?

On the lower left side of the block, on the intake side, right above the oil pan, there is a green VIN tag, It is the same VIN as the chassis.

https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/vin_tools/

type in the VIN on the site and it gives a generic break down of the car it came from:
Year, make, model, trim, country of origin, etc.

Honda catalog shows the same part number for ring sets 96-00 for the D16Y8 which is 13011-P2F-A01. There are additional sizes for oversize for rebuilds .25 over and .50 over but they also share similar part numbers for 96-00.

It means it's from a '98 and not a '97 (also those date stamps are often a year older than the model year of the car)
