Falken took top honors in STS at Nationals!!
Despite the recent press on BFGs the cheaper Falken Azenis ruled the STS class final results and even more suprising is the 2nd place showint with Hankook tires in STS-L class.

Anyone know what tires Jason Tripple and Richard West had on?? If they were Falken then the first BFG KDs listed were on Pers GRM Civic 02' Si. Looks like Azenis are the tires to run on in STS, for a while at least.
Congrats to Jesse for placing 24th on his first time out!!

Holy Fock look at what Hankook is paying out to get people to drive on their tires!!

Damn that's some good money they're giving away. Time to take closer look at the K-104s!

Richard West i s at most of my local autocrosses, and he usually funs the KD's. He's also awesome to watch- his RS is like a big gokart
He also kicked my *** about 2 years ago by about 3 seconds on a 60 second course
Although now I have Evolution Phase I & II and other schools under my belt

Well, we still need to see the final results from day 2 before rendering final judgment. That being said, it is very likely that we'll see Falken occupy a majority of the trophy spots in STS, making it the go-fast tire in STS we already know it to be. And for 1/2 the cost of the BFG, the Azeni is about as big a no brainer as you will find...

As noted, those results are NOT final.
Hankook has been paying out for most of the season, where have you all been (the ones that thought it was new news).
Also, I wouldn't count Tipple out, and I think he might be running the BFG, though last year he was running the "outdated" RE-71 Bridgestone.
Also, if no one is runnig a BFG, it doesn't matter how good they are, no one will win. All the best drivers this year are running Falkens.

Results are not final, and if you look at STX yesterday, the results changed big time from day 1 to day 2. Jeff and Todd were like 4th and 5th after day 1, and shot up to 1st and 2nd after day 2.
Okay so I got a bit excited. However I still think the top drivers will be on Azenis and I'm surprised that more aren't on KDs? But for them like me the cost out weights the benifits.
NOW the final STS results are in:

Honda's dominate. Wow. I read somewhere that Shenefield bought Tipples car. Does that mean they were co-driving, or did Tipple pick up another '89 Si?
Tipple had two of 'em...guess he sold the wrong one
DOH!
Great job to all the HT board members that did well!

LOL and they are still kicking the 2.5RS out of STS??

Wierd that there wasn't a single Integra entered in STS this year -- all of the Honda products there were Civics. Maybe that should tell me something...

I think weight is the reason. A GS-R is too heavy IMO to win STS. The ITR is lighter, faster, has a LSD and is still slower than STS. I'm not convinced it can become faster than the little Civics unless we can find a way to stuff more tire under the car.
As it stands we're limited to 205's on the Type R (based on the available choices) and it weighs at least 300 lbs more than the Civic, probably more like 400. That's a lot of weight to give up to a car that has the same rubber on the road, regardless of how much more hp we have.

I'm perplexed by this as well. Here we have a car (GS-R) that is one of the most popular tuner cars, yet they aren't that popular with STS autocrossers. We have several GS-R's that run in STS locally, but you just don't see many at the divisional or national level. That could change if the RS gets bumped to STX. I'd think they would be a front runner if prepared well.

As long as you keep the Falkens cool, they are every bit the tire that the BFG is, and a whole lot cheaper. Plus, they have a stiffer sidewall and are very predictible in what they do.
And yes--after this last year, I've come to the conclusion that the GSR won't be able to be an STS contender with the much lighter civics. Same rubber, more weight and same open diff = slower car. The extra power won't help out too much on an autox course.

Well now I don't feel as bad about my skillz... the two guys who always kick my *** in STS locally placed 4th and 12th at Nat's.
Way to go Richard and Courtney!
