ive had my accord since 70,000 miles now its 170,000 its always slipped. or the rpms rev up and wont shift unless l let off the gas. im thinking it has to be the torque converter what do u think? also drives great in d3 only does this in d4

100K miles out of a slipping transmission? Wow.
Have you ever changed the transmission fluid? Have you looked at the FAQ section and checked the shift solenoids?

yup l have changed the fluid a while back and no l havent checked shift solenoids. l know they are the two round cylinders on top of tranny but not exactly sure how to test them out.

There are two pairs. There is the pair that is mounted to the top of the transmission near the starter, and another pair that faces toward the radiator. With the car off, pull off the connectors(green IIRC), there will be two wires per. Using a jumper wire from the (+) terminal on the battery to the connector leading to the solenoids check them to hear if they make an audible 'click' when powered on and off. If they do not click they may be sticking. If they do click, you may wish to remove the solenoids from the transmission and check that the pintle valves are free and clear of crud, and that the filter screens that protect the valves are clean. If they are gummed up the solenoids will not be able to properly control gear shifting.

There is an illustrated link with how to check them but for the life of me I cannot find the link.

In or near NC I have no idea. There is a place down the road from me that imports and I know of two other people who have used their engines/transmissions without a hitch. Rebuilds are pricey. Honda wants 4500 I but has a good warranty. The local shops wanted 1200-3500. Looking on the board here, there really isn't much to the transmission. Clutch packs seem to be the big wear item, replace those and you should be good to go(if they are worn) I believe the shift solenoids are pretty much the same throughout the 90s.

yea but having 170,000 miles plus when l went to change my head gasket before cuz l dont think it was ever done from the person l got it from, the valve cover bolts well 2 of them broke off the threads were heated in they broke off in the head. big prob l had to try to drill and tap them out didnt work. so l ended up have to put heil a coil in the 2 spots and put a all thread bolt with a wing nut so.... lm kinda ready to do a swap if not a complete overhaul

@madmike, is the connector for the transmission in the same location on the 96 ex 4 cylinder? I had me rear main seal replaced a few months ago anf am noticing the tranny slipping when warm. Also had the tranny oil replaced. Maybe need tranny flush?
