Whats up HT!
So here's the deal, in the next week or two I should have my 00 PY ITR back from the body shop lookin like it just got kicked out of an acura showroom... minus the jdm front... and the jdm 16's... and... nevermind.
I also ordered about 2k worth of new acura interior panels, now once I put these panels in I dont ever want to remove them again, its just eliminates the possibility of breaking any clips on the panels and the chance of major scratches while handling and removing the panels... might seem crazy and im not worried about the $$$ to replace a couple panels again... Im more worried about them not being available from the dealer and my 100% mint interior getting screwed over by a stinkin scratch on a headliner or something.
So having said that, Im one of those older guys who no longer thinks loud is cool,... well I actually do, but my poor tender old man ears get very annoyed by road noise these days so I'm wondering about doing some type of sound deadening in the R to keep things a little more hush hush.
Things to consider...
Total weight of installing dynamat lite should be no more than 10 pounds..
This is not a race car
This is not a daily driver by any stretch
The car is oem except for spoon coils, ct icebox
The car has a rebuilt title, not from theft or collision (long story)
The car has a jdm b18cR swap, not original motor
The car will be mint in/out
I dont mind the car being modded a bit due to the fact that i cannot locate the original long block, and the title is "dirty".. so having a little bit of dynamat under some panels isnt going to break my "purist" heart and nor will it hurt the performance of my non race car.
My concern is this,
Will dynamat make a significant difference? The only reviews I can find on this and similar products seem to deal more with keeping sound in... stupid car audio homos.
I mean really, if I dynamet the majority of the floor, interior of the quarter panels and doors, firewall, rear trunk wall etc... will it actually be able to dull the noise down a fair bit, or only on a level my dog could notice?
So in a nut shell thats my issue.. anyone got some experience with sound deadening in the R?
Love the car, love hondas, but would love to silence it a little bit so when I do take it out for the odd drive, i can actually have a conversation with the person next to me lol.
Cheers.

it actually does make a difference. the rear hatch plastic and floor pan are probably going to be where you notice the biggest sound decrease. after that it's the doors. if you already have the car apart and are trying to quiet it down the stuff works.
Dynamat is a great product, no matter what it is used for.
You will most certainly get some nice sound deadening from it, but lets face it, it won't be perfect.
If you take your time and cut it and fit it right, you could get a really, REALLY quiet ride out of it...

When I got my R it had over 25 lbs of the original dynamat in the trunk... it was a mess. One of the first things I removed! If think its gonna be loud no matter what though...
From a resale perspective I'd leave it stock
If you're going to keep it forever go for it, whatever floats your boat, just try and keep it to 10lbs only

I would rather have a nice clunk sound then chatter and rattle.
go for it if you ask me but also look for other alternatives as dynamat really isnt the best bet for your buck.

As much as I enjoy a quiet car I don't think I could Dynamat my R. In that car I want to hear everything.
But that being said a friend of mine works as a car stereo installer and we laid Dynamat in spare tire area of his EG along with very small pieces in his rear panels and doors. Three inch turbo exhaust that use to be very annoying in the car was now a whisper. He has yet to do the floorpan. So yes it works extremely well. GL

I'd also look into some of the other brands like Second Skin and RAAMaudio (BXT product). You get alot more for money with these products than Dynamat.

Do it if you'd like, whatever makes you happy. I don't think you could put on enough that will make a tremendous difference without adding a decent amount of weight, but like you said it's not a race car, and it's not clean title.

For the people stating that the noise of the r is one of its best features, I agree.. I love the noise of the R, the engine noise that is, not the noise of the road contacting the tires lol
I also think even with some serious effort put towards sound deadening on the R, it will still be a lot louder than you might expect. I think the sound will still be great, just slightly muffled... I'm still on the fence about it right now,... just want the effin car finished already... I'll post the only post-paint pic up that I have... sorry it's all i got for now...

On a completely unrelated subject,
I have been pulling my hair out looking for a new dd, right now I have a 03 wrx and I just hate it, complete piece of ****, it handles like a minivan, terrible for road noise, useless no fold down rear seats, terrible mpg (partially my fault due to the mods, dont let stock axle back fool you), and generally **** poor in the looks department. Wierd thing is I've owned a few subarus.. they are more like a bad habbit than anything... mine also has uber rare dealer installed leather...oooo la la.
I've been looking at tons of cars to replace it, tsx, rdx, tl, civic si sedan, fx35, xc90, s60r, g35, etc.. I sometimes wonder if the DC/EG chassis hondas are simply the best cars ever.
So far I'm not too happy with anything I've driven and the rdx was a big let down for me, looking at a tsx tmw night and then a civic si sedan, truth be told their the only ones I have never driven before so hopefully one surprises me, the tsx seems to have everything I want.. except for about 40 extra whp.. but thats okay cause every time i get in the R it will seem so much faster than after I drive the wrx lol... (just for clarity, 04-08 tsx)

Another shot of the current ITR, pre body shop...

Death cage was removed btw lol.
Cant wait for my R, glass went in at body shop today.
