When you crank the engine look at your headlights, or interior light and see how much it dims. If it doesnt dim at all, or very very little you might have a problem with the starter itself, or something wrong with the wires connecting the system to the batt.

If the starter is already turning the engine over appropriately...

It could be the ICM (ignition control module) located in the distributor that's failing if there is no spark (or other ignition related components can cause this).
It could be the fuel pump if there is no fuel pressure when you turn the key on. The fuel pump turns on for 2 seconds when you first turn the key to the ON position. The check engine light turns on during this period, then turns off after 2 secs if no codes are stored by the ECM.
You need to check for spark and fuel pressure and proceed systematically. Good luck.

thanks i have a cel due to a test pipe that was on the car and i recently replaced it back to a cat but havent been able to get rid of the cel i think its from the o2 wiring since it was spliced in order to extend

yea i will check for fuel pressure, spark and compression

It could be your main relay, the one up under the dash. I had similar issues
when the relay was dying. As soon as i replaced it, no more start up probs.
Or as suggested it could be the starter motor itself, trying having someone
tap the solenoid when you turn the key, if that works you need a new starter.
Hope thats of some help. GL with it.
