hi all, ok I need some help. i have a b16a obd 0 in my 90 civic si and im getting the vss code and my speedometer isnt working. iv been doing a little research but never got a definate answer. I was just wondering what is the easy fix for this problem. do i get a new cluster from a different civic and if so what year and what model. i read somewhere that somebody used a 90-93 integra vss or something like that.

if its a cable (non-electronic) vss on your tranny it should work just fine, check to make sure its plugged in the back of your cluster. All non electronic vss's will work. It doesnt matter its just a cable plugging into a little gear. Unless the gear is completely stripped out, which would make the vss bad it should work just fine.

ya it looks like theres a single cable running from my cluster to my tranny. so to know if its any good i have to take that cable off to check the gears inside right?
and if the gears are bad do i get a new cable or just gears. if so what cable will work.

Make sure the cable isn't broke. That's the normal thing that happens. When you take the cable out of the tranny, pull on the metal tip coming from the cable, if it comes out it's broke.

yeah but its just one gear, the vss has a little gear on the end just make sure it isnt stripped out, and make sure its plugged into the back of your cluster and make sure that the cable isnt broke, those are the only 3 things that can go wrong.

ok i figured it out i think. theres a retaining clip that holds the cable in the tranny housing that i am missing for some reason so the cable wont stay in the housing. now i just have to find the clip i need.

Did you try that step first? if you feel the cable comes out of the sleeve then it's broke, and it's going to continue to throw the code.

There are some pics here:

(go to the bottom of the page)

Inner cable should like be 34 3/4" long...

ok so the cable will just slide out if i pull on it so that means its broke right. and if its broke do i just get a new inner cable or the whole assembly. and if i have to get a new one what vehicle do i order it for cause i have a b16a in my 90 civic si.
