Default Replace Water Temp Sensor?

Ok, today I decided to test my water temperature sensor. I jumped the wires on the plug that goes into the sensor under the distributor and when I went to turn the ignition on, the gauge didn't move. The check engine light stayed on and made a weird click noise with a faint dimming, kinda like a blink. Does this mean I need to replace the temperature sensor or should I replace the water temp gauge?

The sensor for the gauge is the single wire conector not a two wire one.

Yeah I figured that out lol. Well I actually tested the real one and the gauge moved, but it moved slightly downward. It didn't move up. Does that mean I have an open circuit or maybe I am not using the right kind of jumper wire?
