anybody using je pistons on the h22?
Wel as some of you may no ive decided to go high comp on my h22 , id done some research into it but not much and came up with the je 12.0.1 pistons , although this may seem good , As i later discovered The H22's block is all aluminum, with no steel sleeves like other Honda engines have. Instead, Honda casts a carbon-fiber matrix around the cylinder area. The carbon is strong enough to eliminate the need for steel sleeves. Porsche 944 engines are similar.
Now mhale have produced a piston coated and designed to run with a stock h22 block , but from what i can gather they only offer a 11.5.1 piston , obv not as good as the je but in some ways maybe more efficient giving the design of them , they then go on to explain that this piston along with brian crower stage 3 cams and rets etc will see 200 whp with various test on high mileage engines, then 470cc/min injectors , hondata , intake and exhaust/mani 240 whp and masses of tourque ,
i cant help but think that brian crower is crap ??? and with a better combo set up , ie mhale/skunk2 could foresee more gains .
anyway the point to this thread is to actually get some points from ppl who have ran high comp je pistons and do there 12.0.1 pistons work without me sleeving my block like the mhale, please let me no as its kinda put a halt to my plan atm untill im 100% sure on the right one

Only the Mahle gold series and JUN's pistons will work with the FRM, everything else you'll need a resleeve. If you read just about every build thread out there Skunk2 cams are going to outperform the Crower's. I expect NirVTEC to pop in at any sec to openly dog Crower's cams. =p
Oh and I forgot one thing, the JUN pistons only work with the closed deck blocks, not the 96+ open decks. Not sure if Mahle are the same.

If your target is 240whp then I might go with the JE, forged pistons. Few things to take into consideration though. First of course is the price. With the JE's your going to need to pay for sleeves and have a shop mill you bottom end. Worth it if you can afford it. Second consideration is that I wouldn't trust may shops to mill a H22 so you need to do some research on that and figure out who you want to do the work and also factor in shipping cost if your not going local.
No, you cannot run the JE's without sleeving. I don't remember where the thread is, but there's a thread floating around here with pix of someone who tried and demolished the cylinder walls. The JUN pistons should work with any year, the cylinder walls are exactly the same.
Specifically not to use them in open deck, or just doesn't list them? From what I could find on their site, they only list applications through BB4 and simply don't include the BB6, probably because they dropped support *officially* for OBD2. However, Honda does have different part numbers for the a1 and a4, so I'm not totally sure the differences other than that the a1 is a pressed fit wrist pin and the a4 is a floating pin.

They changed their site around but there used to be a note saying cylinder liner exchange required except for BB1/4 which I thought had something to do with the durability of the open deck block or lack there of. Found that note though on a site that sells JUN stuff though.

ok pretty simple answe sleeve your block and you will not have to worry about wat pistons you use. You will have more choices of companys and different packages you want to make. For turbo, all motor and nitro...
I had crower 3 on my motor and i am switching to pro 2's that should help you out with the cam question
