transmission noise/grinding dilema
ok so about a month ago i changed out the oil in the trans and put fresh honda MTF in.. shifting got a little smoother especially at higher rpms... now within the last couple weeks i have noticed a deffinately noticible noise when gear...idk how to exactly explain it but it sounds like a bearing going out... it will happen ocasionaly in first after about3500rpm and alway in 2nd through 5th... but when i depress the clutch the noise goes away.. so what im trying to confirm without pulling my trans is if its a shaft bearing or my input shaft bearing.... cuz at idle and in neutral it sounds like the gear teeth are slapping or knocking into eachother ... so if anyone has had the same or similar problem and has corrected it let me know what was the problem..... thnk u guys
I had the same problem on my 98 HX, a lot of people said it was the clutch. i did a bit of research and found that the 96-00 SOHC trannys had a main input shaft bearing problem. I got a rebuild kit from autozone for about $300. when i split the tranny i found the bearing was falling apart. I have rebuilt 2 trannys for the same problem. the second one was so bad that the main shaft was moving in the tranny causing it to pop out of gear, the own was lucky and there was no gear damage but it sucked cleaning the thing out.
im having the same problem right now and after a lot of searching i came to the conclusion that it was the input shaft bearing. I went to the dealer and bought the bearing as well as the seal and it cost me $45 total. I haven't replaced it yet because i haven't had time but from what i read this is all you need to fix it
