Default D16Z6 ignition timing help

Since I am about to take it in for smog check, I need to correct the ignition timing to 16 BTDC which was set to 12 BTDC before. I jumped the service connector and see that it is at 12 BTDC. I advanced the ignition timing by rotating the dizzy and it lined up with the index mark (16 BTDC). I stopped the car and went to have lunch. After I came back from lunch, I decided to check it again just to make sure I set it right so I don't fail the smog check for this stupid reason. I started the car but I don't seem to be able find the TDC mark and the 3 marks to the left anymore no matter I advanced or retarded the ignition timing. I don't know what I did wrong and what can I do to bring those marks up top again ( I think they rotated to the bottom)? Please help. Thanks

first make sure your e brake is pulled so the DRL lights dont come on. Then loosen bolts on the distributor, but not to much. bridge the connector on the passenger kick panel. Start your car. Now check the timing with a timing light. You should be able to see the marks. If not turn the distributor a bit until you do. Shouldnt be to hard. If the distributor is turned to much either way the car will run kind of rough so I think you will know if you have gone to far. Set to 16degrees BTDC.
