1988 Integra Build
Hey guys new member here but i've been lurking for a while. been posting up at g1teg.com for a little bit but there is very little member activity there. just gonna copy my posts from there. hope yall enjoy
well i bought my first integra about a week ago for 400 bucks. its an 88 2door hatchback. it ran but not very well. had some ticking at higher rpms and the guy said it needed a new fuel pump. needless to say i'm not going to drive it til i get it all fixed. i've done my research and i've been breaking down the motor as we speak. the model number on the motor is D16a1. its a dual overhead cam engine, seems like they made a single overhead cam version? i noticed some confusion in that part.
anyways i've got the valve cover off and most of parts connecting removed. i just need some help to go from here. this is also my first time taking an engine apart but i'm a fast learner and i know more than most probably did their first time taking an engine apart. anyways i wanna get to my head gaskets to see what condition they're in and i'm stuck at the cams. from what i've read all i need to do is loosen the timing belt and remove the camshaft pulleys? i have the full 89 integra shop manual pdf downloaded and it said i need to turn the pulleys til it says top and align the two notches then put in these two 5mm pins to remove the pulleys?
also some website or a video instruction of the engine gasket getting to it and removal and replacement would be amazing. thanks a lot guys hoping to get some good info from here

thanks for the help guys!
i'm sure there was all kinds of smoke blowing out of it but i didn't run it for very long. the previous owner said the oil pump had gone out and i did not want to run a motor that was starved for oil for very long.
when i first got her home the first thing i did was pull the spark plugs and check em out. they all seemed to have some normal carbon build up except plug #4. it had some good amount of oil in it. after i had pulled the valve cover off i noticed that the spark plug hole had a small chip in it. doesn't seem like it could be the source of the oil leaking but ya never know. here's a pic

anyways i dont wanna have to take everything apart if i dont have to but i wanna get this thing back into some great running shape. i've got my truck to drive so no rush really. plans are to make this my daily driver considering my truck gets about 13.5mpg lol. anyways thanks for the help guys

well guys finally got everything done and needed to pull this engine. right now i'm stuck here as i need to grab a couple more tools to get the rear motor mount unbolted. quite the pita. anyways i'll update yall later still unsure of what exact mods i'm gonna do while the motor is out. i just want to get it in good running condition.
alright guys here's where i'm at

so i have the engine out and the heads off. finally things are going semi smoothly. the head gasket was pretty much destroyed but luckily it seems to look like it didn't have any leaks. it also seems to be almost permantely attached to the mating surface. having a fun time getting all that gunk off. any suggestions would be awesome!
another thing i noticed is why spark plug #4 was coated in oil. it seems the oil is leaking through the valve into the intake manifold. i didnt drive this for long but i'm pretty sure it was leaking/burning oil so thats probably where thats came from.
so now i figure i might as well replace all the valves. i need some suggestions of what would be good replacements? i'm going to do some more searching after this as well. anyways more updates later! can't wait to drive this thing
also need some suggestions for the following
-water pump: i saw in an older post that honda oem is the best but that was almost 7 years ago and i'm sure aftermarket product quality has gone up. but who knows
timing belt: mine looks pretty new when i look at it. but i'd rather replace it now than have to worry about it again while i have the engine apart.
cam gear: i'm really driving this for mpg. would it be worth my time? gonna do some more research on this.
O2 sensor: heard this can go out or get old and cause the engine to run richer. think i'm gonna ad this to the list of things being replaced just to give it a nice refresher.
CV Axles: my drivers side boot is torn and i'm just gonna go ahead and replace it. read that raxles are the way to go? thanks!
