2000 V6 EX: CEL, Misfire and Smelly
I have a 2000 V6 3.0L with the distributorless ignition. The other day on start-up the car immediately began idling rough. Turn it off and started again, same results, but the check engine light also began to flash. I checked the codes and got a: P0302, P0303, P0304, P0300 and a P1399 PD...seems like I'm getting a random misfire.
I checked the coils, they seemed good. Replaced some 2 month old plugs with NGK Iridiums (the old plugs still looked good). Also added an entire can of Sea Foam to the fuel. Started it up, but it still idled rough, although it seemed a little better. After warming it up for several minutes, I took it around the block. Car was sluggish, particularly on low speeds. CEL seemed to flash intermittently. Took it home after about a mile and checked the codes again, this time is just had P1399 PD. Took it for a ride again and checked the codes again, this time the original 5 random misfire codes appear.
The EGR valve is new, plugs are new, and coils looked good. Not sure what else too look for. After the car is warm, there is a really bad smell from the outside of the car, I think its the sulfur smell from the CAT. Not sure if the misfire is causing the CAT to smell or if the CAT is clogged, but I figure if the CAT was clogged, I would get error codes for that. Some people have suggested to check the 02 sensors, but I haven't done that because no error codes have appeared.
Any help would be appreciated.

Needed to get the car back up and running, so I called a service tech at the local Honda dealership today. He was actually quite helpful and he suspects the car needs a valve adjustment based on the year and mileage. He immediately rattled off the same codes and said this is a common maintenance item issue for the car. So I ended up taking the car to them. They won't charge for the code diagnostic, they'll just verify the codes and then perform the valve adjustment. They were 99% sure that was the problem. He said the valves get too tight and it won't make any noise since its tight.
He said some home mechanics get this error code misdiagnosed mainly because they don't here the ticking noise in the valve. So they bypass the valve adjustment issue and start replacing the plugs, coils, etc.
We'll see if this is correct when I pickup the car tomorrow.

Did the valve adjustment correct your problem? My 2000 accord did the same thing. It was fine one day then started it up and all of those codes appeared. Just put a can of sea foam in today. It is shaking like a tank. Just wanted to check because the honda dealer here charges $85 to hook up to computer.
