What Transmission
I'm looking into getting a new transmission for my 97 civic. I'm being told that i need the S40 transmission. But im not a car person, so i figured id get more than 1 persons opinion.
The civic i got is a 97' Civic DX, the engine has been swapped and a D16Y8 is now in its place. or so im told, any help would be appreciated

There is an issue with the transmission, i am told its the throwout bearing, but with some research i am to assume its the Inline shaft bearing. but all in all the thing is old anyway, so i figured i might as well grab a newer transmission and save myself from future hassles

You mean Input Shaft Bearing? If so, decently easy to change. Though if you want to get a new trans get another Y8/EX trans - it's the shortest one so it'll get you the most power and still has a high enough rear end & 5th that you won't be too high in the revs on the highway.
Yes, sorry for typo. i was told it was an expensive change so thats whats leading me to find a new trans. was also told from the guy i bought it from, my brother in law (honda mechanic) that it is the throwout bearing but its free running, or something like that, when it isnt supposed to be

I'd say you'd have better luck getting your bro to help you pull out the trans and change the throwout bearing (or ISB) than buying a new trans altogether. Also, if he's a Honda mechanic, he should be able to diagnose the problem once he hears it.
As the EX's gearing isn't particularly short, there's no need to use a DX trans just because you boosted, use the EX and get more power/torque to the ground - the RPM will still be quite low at high speeds in 5th.

and like he said that could be fixed fairly easy... unless your trans has alot of miles and you want to find one with less.....
all up to you bro
but no matter what you do I would replace the clutch while you got the trans off...

Any '92-'00 Civic manual transmission will fit besides the 1999-2000 Civic Si transmission. The '92-'95 ones are S20 and the '96-'00 ones are S40, but they'll all work.
Swapping a transmission out and replacing the whole thing is a lot easier than tearing the transmission apart to replace the ISB (input shaft bearing) or throw out bearing.
Check Craigslist and the marketplace here for used transmissions. Local car forums might also help out. Make sure there's no play in the shaft when you pick it up. I picked my '96-'00 EX transmission up with a slight 3d gear grind (grinds going into gear when you shift hard) for $40, talked down from $60. I wouldn't pay more than $150 for an EX transmission.

you have choices to make... an S40-K4f, aka 96-00 ex/d16y8 trans, will get you good acceleration overall with a cruise rpm of 2850 @ 65mph
or if you don't care about how fast you leave a red light I would suggest a P20-A000, aka 92-95 vx/cx d15 trans has a cruise speed of 2150 @ 65mph. = more MPG!!! its whats going in my DD
there are a few trans in between... if you could really care less I would suggest putting in whatever you find that is cheap and LOW on miles
